Velas Resorts

How much would it take for you to ditch your cell phone while on vacation? What if powering down garnered you a complimentary snorkeling session or a free massage?

Trying to unplug while on holiday is hardly a novel aspiration, but the Velas Resorts in Mexico are taking the trend to the next level with the launch of their Digital Detox programs.

Among the new offerings is an on-staff detox concierge at the Riviera Nayarit location, who will “cleanse” your room of electronics like the standard flat-screen tv before arrival, stow all personal gadgets for the duration of your trip, and offer low-tech entertainment options (think classic board games, yoga, campfire sessions) to help you fully relax and enjoy the company of your travel companions

Perhaps more interesting is the program at the brand’s Riviera Maya property, where they actively incentivize disconnecting from the digital world with free services (spa treatments, eco-tours, snorkeling sessions) for guests willing to relinquish their cell phones, tablets, and other personal electronics.

Simply participate in one activity per day to complete the program, and you’ll receive the electronics back at the end of your trip. Don’t worry. Instagram will still be there when you get home.
