This New Private Island Resort in Madagascar Is a Vacation Paradise
Open this month, Miavana, on the private island of Nosy Ankao, promises to be one of the most exclusive beach resorts in the country — if not all of Africa.
With just 14 one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas to choose from, all of which face the sea, guests will have total privacy. The solar-powered villas, which sit on the western side of the island, have been constructed using recycled materials and local Malagasy stone, and come complete with a private pool, kitchen, and butler service.

Other over-the-top resort amenities include an infinity pool that faces the Indian Ocean, two helicopters that guests can take to visit nearby islands, and a “Cabinet of Curiosities,” in other words a mini-museum featuring regional artifacts like dinosaur bones and an elephant bird egg.
The team that runs Miavana, Time + Tide Africa, also manage several safari lodges in Zambia — so it’s only fitting that the resort has a strong wildlife and adventure component. Nosy Ankao is set within the Loky Manambato Protected Area, a marine park of pristine coral reefs, which means that guests can go snorkeling, diving, and even whale-watching just off-shore. On a land-based excursion, you can spot lemurs and turtles nesting on the beach. And the sights don’t end when the sun goes down: The Miavana staff will even set up a private sleepout under the stars.
Of course, exclusive doesn't come cheap: Rates start at $2,500 per night, all-inclusive.
