Marriott Hotels Changes Cancelation Policy to 48 Hours in Advance
Travelers staying at Marriott properties will now need to plan a little further in advance if they need to cancel.
Marriott has changed its cancelation policy, requiring guests to cancel 48 hours in advance instead of 24 if they want to avoid paying fees at locations in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
“This will allow hotels a better chance to make the rooms available to guests seeking last minute accommodations,” Marriott wrote in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure.
The rule will not apply to Design Hotels and Marriott Vacation Worldwide Hotels, though it will apply to other locations in the Starwood network, including W Hotels, St. Regis, Westin, Sheraton and Courtyard hotels, CNN Money reported.
Marriott noted in the statement that the previous cancelation policy was keeping many of their rooms empty.
Marriott and Hilton both updated their respective policies in 2014, restricting last-minute cancelations. The change could be in part motivated by the fact that with more people booking online, there are fewer walk-ins looking for a last minute room, leaving many hotels with fewer spontaneous visitors, and preventing them from reaching full capacity, The New York Times reported at the time.
This latest policy change was instated June 15 and only applies to reservations made on or after this date.
