George and Amal Clooney Are Selling Their Home in Los Cabos, Mexico
The Hollywood actor has reportedly put his Los Cabos mansion on the market. But fear not, George—there are still plenty of places to stay with Amal, now that the Baja Peninsula is back online in the wake of Hurricane Odile.
Corazones everywhere broke yesterday in Mexico as news outlets reported that George Clooney is selling his Los Cabos mansion.
The Hollywood actor—who married human rights lawyer Amal Clooney last September in Venice, Italy—is apparently looking to unload the seven-bed, ten-bath beachfront property so he can spend more time with his wife in England and Los Angeles, where the couple also has homes.
This may be tragic news for Mexico, but Los Cabos still has plenty of reason to celebrate. Hit hard by Hurricane Odile last fall, the Baja Peninsula is officially on the upswing, as existing resorts reopen after extensive renovations (that included some much-needed face-lifts) and design-centric newcomers plant their feet in the sand over the coming months.
And though the Clooneys will reportedly stay with good friends Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford when they return to Cabo, we compiled a list of new-and-improved places to stay—should they find Casa Gerber too crowded for their liking. Even better news: non-celebs are welcome, too.
A mainstay since the 1950s for Hollywood A-listers that include Jennifer Aniston, Eva Longoria, and Dustin Hoffman, this 173-room resort recently unveiled a glamorous seven-month-long renovation. The new crown jewel: an expanded 22,000-square-foot spa, which features 13 private treatment villas—each with its own courtyard, plunge pool, and rain shower. For George, we recommend the new “Barber and Blade” grooming option (should he decide to shave that infamous scruff); for Amal, something to give those stiletto-strapped heels a break, like the Bastien Global Pedicure, designed by French podiatrist Bastien Gonzalez to target joint flexibility and improve circulation and elasticity.
The Cape, a Thompson Hotel
Each of the 161 rooms at this new beachfront retreat offers a private balcony with views of the famed El Arco rock formation, located at the southern tip of Cabo San Lucas. And while it’s a definite newcomer, having only opened last month, the resort features a signature seafood restaurant helmed by Mexican sensation Enrique Olvera—meaning it’s here to stay.
The Resort at Pedregal
Romance is elemental to this boutique resort, carved into a cliff on 24 private oceanfront acres in the secluded neighborhood of Pedregal. Among recent updates is a 16-seat Champagne Terrace with thatched-roof bar—an even more picturesque setting for George and Amal to soak up each other’s beautifulness.
Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort
Fresh off a ten-month closure, this family-friendly resort (could there be a Clooney baby on the horizon?) unveiled phase one of a multi-million dollar renovation just last week. Food and beverage updates include three new spaces: Mio, for healthy snack foods; Azul, for tastings of Mexican mescal and 100-plus types of tequila; and La Onda, for beachfront beers and ceviche (the hotel is set on one of the Peninsula’s only swimmable beaches). Also new are 65 Club-level suites, plus an expanded salon and spa—complete with 15 treatment rooms, a group fitness studio, indoor-outdoor yoga pavilion, and Zen garden.
Las Ventanas al Paraíso, a Rosewood Resort
This perennial favorite remains front-and-center in Los Cabos, with 83 suites and villas (the latter now offers guests a team of personal assistants called Villa Hosts), plus new programs like tastings with a tequila master and cooking classes in the pre-Hispanic technique of barbacoa (“barbecue”).
Esperanza, an Auberge Resort
Poolside cabanas, remodeled rooms, and a ceviche bar are just a few of the new additions to this exclusive cliffside property. Also on offer? More than 30 complimentary fitness classes a week—so Amal can maintain that svelte figure—plus five championship-level golf courses nearby, where George can perfect his short game.
JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa
Opening November 2015, the latest resort property from the JW Marriott brand will feature 299 rooms, all with unobstructed ocean views (the property is set at the tip of the Peninsula, where the Sea of Cortés and the Pacific Ocean meet); seven restaurants; a beach club; and a spa and fitness center that includes a temezcal, or traditional Mexican sweat lodge.
