Want to travel for an epic New Year's Eve celebration? Here’s when you'll score the best flight prices.
New Year’s Eve may not be a congested travel holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas, but there are major celebrations worth traveling for across the globe.
According to the travel search engine Skyscanner, the week of November 21 is your earliest opportunity to score savings on New Year holiday flights. Coincidentally, this is also the best time to book your flight home for Christmas.
Based on historical airfare prices from travelers that departed Dec. 26-31, 2015 and returned between Jan. 1-3, 2016, Skyscanner projects up to 4.14 percent savings on flights booked the week of Thanksgiving. Whether you want to watch the ball drop in Times Square or ring in the New Year with a four-day celebration in Edinburgh, this is your earliest opportunity to save.
If you haven’t decided how you want to usher in 2017 just yet, don’t worry. Skyscanner predicts the best New Year’s Eve travel savings will arrive the week of December 5. Travelers may save nearly 11 percent on flights by holding off until the first week of December. Last-minute savings can be scored as late as December 26, where prices may drop by 6.72 percent.
“We uncovered that the week of August 10 was the best time to book Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve travel in 2015,” Randi Wolfson, Skyscanner’s head of communications for the Americas, told Travel + Leisure. That means that things have shifted quite a bit since last year—or, perhaps, that airfare may be as unpredictable as always.
