When You Should Book a Hotel for the Holidays
If you haven’t booked your hotel for the winter holiday yet, you’re in luck: The most affordable time to reserve a room is right around the corner.
For their holiday report, TripAdvisor analyzed historical bookings and search data for destinations across the globe during the last two weeks in December. The results show hotel prices were, on average, significantly cheaper during Thanksgiving week.
Travelers could save as much as 21 percent by booking a hotel in the United States in between bites of turkey and pie. New York City hotels, for example, slash room rates in mid-November by as much as 25 percent.
If what you really want is to escape your family and spend the holidays abroad, this applies to European hotels, too. Hotel room prices decline in mid-November, with savings ranging from 5 to 15 percent.
South American and Asian hotel deals can be found as early as September, but prices don’t drop off for hotels in the Middle East, the South Pacific, and Africa until November. Unfortunately, TripAdvisor reported Caribbean hotel prices “remaining relatively steady,” with average rates hovering around $243 year-round.
Certain cities hold better deals than others, of course. TripAdvisor noted travelers could save 17 percent on holiday hotels in Barcelona and Cancun in early November, 20 percent in London (though a last-minute December booking could score rates 35 percent cheaper than average), 23 percent off Parisian properties in early November, and 20 percent or more in Rome. Travelers headed to Berlin could save 35 percent or more come November.
