Universal Studios Hollywood has the ideal antidote to a Los Angeles heat wave: Butterbeer ice cream.
The creamy, cold ode to the Harry, Ron and Hermione’s favorite Hogsmeade drink has arrived at the California theme park, delighting young wizards through summer and beyond. The hard-packed indulgence is even served in themed individual containers, meaning you won’t have to share a lick of the sweet swirled ice cream and its deep brown sugar-and-vanilla flavors.
Though The Wizarding World of Harry Potter already offers five butterscotch-infused treats — Butterbeer Potted Cream at Three Broomsticks, Butterbeer Fudge pieces at Honeydukes and the classic Butterbeer beverage served hot, cold or as a frozen slushy at various drink stands — this summer marks the first time Butterbeer ice cream has been served on the West Coast. (In Orlando, it’s served as soft-serve at Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour at Universal Studios Florida, and in similar scoop packs at Universal’s Islands of Adventure.)
Diagon Alley fans should note that although the famed Florean Fortescue’s has not yet made it to California, its cutesy packaging and crafty concoctions have. Butterbeer-flavored ice cream joins the ranks of another quirky flavor, Strawberry and Peanut Butter, which is sold throughout the Harry Potter-themed land along with chocolate and vanilla.
Other summertime happenings have arrived throughout Wizarding World as well, including a bit of fire to counteract the icy treat. Two new spells, which can be unlocked with a simple flick of the wrist by way of one of the magically inclined land’s wands, have been added to the park’s Hogsmeade Village. “Incendio,” which shoots flames out of a nearby chimney, intriguingly varies in intensity from wizard to wizard, and a new “Alohomora” spell unlocks an intricate door dispelling smoke and surprise effects hinting at what mysterious creatures may lie beyond it.
The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle, a seasonal evening performance themed to the hallowed school’s four houses, is back up for the summer, new Cheese Toastie with Chicken and Sunday Roast sandwiches have arrived at Three Broomsticks and Hermione’s famed Yule Ball gown is now for sale at the Gladrags Wizardwear clothing shop. (And yes, before you ask, it comes in both child and adult sizes.) A pricey copy of Severus Snape’s button-up robe is also for sale, but you may want to hold off until summer subsides — the $495 floor-length costume replica isn’t quite coastal gear.
