You would always expect a Caribbean beach destination to have some amazing seafood, and Cancun doesn't disappoint. It lays claim to an unbelievable location on the tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula; the city sits right on the vibrant Caribbean Sea, the immense Mesoamerican Reef is just offshore, and the nearby Gulf of Mexico is teeming with marine life. With so much to choose from, it’s no wonder that seafood restaurants abound in this awe-inspiring beach destination. Cancun is the perfect place to feast on a wide variety of flavorful and fresh meals like ceviche, fried fish, lobster, crab, and even octopus. Whether you want a local-style family lunch, an upscale dinner, or a romantic evening on the lagoon, Cancun offers plenty of options for a fresh and fun seafood experience during your upcoming beach vacation. Here are my top picks for the very best seafood restaurants in the city of Cancun.

Fish Fritanga

Fish Fritanga is not only my personal favorite, the restaurant gets top billing in my book for two reasons. First, it serves the most authentic Mexican seafood that I’ve ever found in Cancun. Second, the location: the main part of the restaurant is on a small beach hidden away from Kukulcan Boulevard, with a charming outdoor setting by Nichupte Lagoon.

Location, location, location! One of Cancun's most famous restaurants, Lorenzillo's sits on a large pier over Nichupte Lagoon in the heart of the Hotel Zone. It has indoor dining, an outdoor terrace with lovely views, and even a wine cellar. You can expect to pay a little more here, but the views, the ambiance and the live lobster make the experience worth every peso.

Va Q’ Va

It would unforgiveable to leave this restaurant off the list. It is hands down the most popular seafood restaurant for Cancun locals, although it's so far out of the main tourist area that I only recommend it for those who know Downtown Cancun very well. If you can find it, Va Q' Va has affordable, fresh, and amazing seafood like ceviche and family-size platters. My recommendations: the Va Q' Vuela shrimp and the Va Q’ Va michelada.

Crab House

This upscale seafood restaurant has a breathtaking location on Nichupte Lagoon in the Cancun Hotel Zone, offering amazing views of the water from its outdoor terrace. Crab House serves a variety of seafood, including lobster, several kinds of crab, calamari, shrimp, fish, and much more. This is a great choice for a romantic dinner.

Cocos and Grill

Rumored to have the best ceviche in town, Cocos and Grill is a restaurant and beach club in the northern part of the Hotel Zone. In addition to some excellent seafood and steaks, it also offers a pool and loungers so you can enjoy a relaxing beach day after a mouthwatering lunch.
