And if you’re looking to leave the noise and hectic pace of your everyday life behind, you can’t do much better than a farm stay. These properties are set on actual working farms (complete with cute, fluffy animals) to give guests a taste of the simple life. But they also have plenty of comfortable amenities — and the early-morning animal feedings and foraging excursions are totally optional. From lavender farms in New Mexico to Colorado lodges with dozens of goats, these are 10 of the best farm stays in the U.S. The Best Farm Stays in the U.S. of 2023 Editor’s Pick: Beach Plum Farm, New Jersey Liberty Hill Farm & Inn, Vermont Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm, New Mexico Nicewonder Farm & Vineyards, Virginia ABC Acres, Montana Husky Meadows Farm, Connecticut Bee’s Knees Fruit Farm, California Heritage Farm, Indiana Mountain Goat Lodge, Colorado North Country Farms, Hawaii Editor’s Pick: Beach Plum Farm, New Jersey Courtesy of Beach Plum Farm See Rates on Tripadvisor.com Why We Chose It Beach Plum Farm is a Cape May stunner that wouldn’t look out of place in a Nancy Meyers film. Key Specs Free Wi-Fi: YesResort Fee: NoRoom Rate: $$$$ Notable Amenities Outdoor pool, free bike rentals, golf carts provided Farm Overview Located in historic West Cape May (one of the country’s oldest vacation destinations), Beach Plum Farm is a 62-acre working farm that produces over 100 kinds of fruits and vegetables, free-range chickens, eggs, and Berkshire hogs. When pulling up to the property, you might think you accidentally took a wrong turn and landed in the Hamptons. The farm and surrounding cottages are at once rustic and luxurious, with white picket fences, lovely outdoor dining areas, and well-spaced vases of hydrangeas that make us wonder if Ina Garten was a design consultant. In 2018, Beach Plum Farm unveiled six cottages for overnight stays, with enough room for six to eight guests each. The interiors vary from house to house, but they all look identical to what you would find in an interior decorating magazine; amenities include Smeg kitchen appliances, 100% Belgian cotton sheets, and organic bath products made on the farm. Guests aren’t asked to participate in chores like at most other farm stays, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be bored. Each cottage comes with bikes and golf carts for exploring the property, which has an on-site pool and hummingbird and butterfly gardens. Be sure to make reservations for the Farm-to-Table Dinner Series held in the summer and fall. Liberty Hill Farm & Inn, Vermont Courtesy of Liberty Hill Farm & Inn See Rates on Libertyhillfarm.com Why We Chose It Liberty Hill Farm & Inn offers the quintessential farm stay experience, with quaint accommodations, home-cooked meals, and plenty of (optional) chores. Key Specs Free Wi-Fi: YesResort Fee: NoRoom Rate: $$ Notable Amenities Breakfast and dinner included, ski and snowshoe rentals Farm Overview Liberty Hill Farm & Inn is home to about 270 cows (and a few kittens), and guests are invited to participate in almost every aspect of their care. You can bottle-feed newborn calves and try your hand at milking the cows, plus participate in a ton of other bucolic activities, like berry picking, hiking, cross-country skiing, fly-fishing, and tending to the vegetable garden — all while surrounded by views of Vermont’s Green Mountains. As for the “stay” portion of this farm stay, guests can choose one of the bedrooms in the main house, which was originally built in 1825. The house oozes New England charm: think maple wood floors, country-chic furnishings, plenty of quiet reading nooks, and a porch with rocking chairs. The rooms feature handmade quilts and dainty curtains, plus deep soaking tubs in the bathrooms. Bookings include breakfast and dinner each day, with dishes made from ingredients grown right on the farm. Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm, New Mexico Courtesy of Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm See Rates on Tripadvisor.com Why We Chose It Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm has a full-service spa, a delicious restaurant, and many impressive amenities included in the nightly rate. All guests have access to the fitness center and outdoor saltwater pool, as well as complimentary s’mores kits and classes in the Wellness Yurt. The on-site restaurant, Campo, is set in a renovated dairy barn and serves up regional dishes and cocktails (try the lavender spritz to really lean into your surroundings). The Hacienda Spa has a full menu of treatments, many of which incorporate botanicals grown in the surrounding gardens. The treatments pair well with daily yoga and meditation classes for the ultimate relaxation. And lest you forget you’re staying on a working farm, be sure to say hello to the alpacas, peacocks, and sheep that call Los Poblanos home. Nicewonder Farm & Vineyards, Virginia Courtesy of Nicewonder Farm and Vineyard See Rates on Nicewonderfarm.com Why We Chose It Nicewonder Farm & Vineyards is the perfect spot for anyone wanting to enjoy wine and food surrounded by Appalachian views. Key Specs Free Wi-Fi: YesResort Fee: NoRoom Rate: $$$ Notable Amenities Nespresso machines, breakfast included, outdoor swimming pool Farm Overview When it opened its doors in April 2022, the Inn at Nicewonder Farm & Vineyards quickly became one of our favorite places to stay in Virginia. The 450-acre farm — which also includes a 13-acre vineyard — has been owned by the same family for several generations, but the addition of overnight accommodations is definitely a welcome change. Guests can not only sample some of the wines in the vineyard’s tasting room, but now they can also lounge by the pool, share delicious small plates at the restaurant, and fall into a comfy bed at night. The inn features 28 luxury rooms and suites (including a Presidential Suite), which are chic and spacious. Ask for a balcony room to get views of the infinity pool and vineyards. Nicewonder Farm also has a collection of luxury yurts available to rent, although they’re really more like circular cabins than traditional tents and are decorated in a similar high-class style as the main suites. There are also plenty of outdoor activities available, like vineyard tours, archery, hiking, and s’mores by the fire pit. ABC Acres, Montana Courtesy of ABC Acres See Rates on Tripadvisor.com Why We Chose It With four cabin rentals and plenty of friendly animals, ABC Acres is a picture-perfect farm stay in scenic Montana. Key Specs Free Wi-Fi: YesResort Fee: NoRoom Rate: $$$ Notable Amenities Pet-friendly cabins, private fire pits Farm Overview For a taste of the Wild West that’s not too wild, book a stay on this Montana farm. Guests are invited to mingle with the resident goats, chickens, and honeybee hives, and they can even help feed the livestock and tend to the gardens. ABC Acres is complementing its farm offerings with a shift toward a nature preserve, meaning that visitors can also view and learn about the elk, birds, and amphibians that call the grounds home. Additionally, the massive property can connect guests with local guides who operate fly-fishing, horseback riding, ATV, and other excursions in the area. ABC Acres has four cabins, the largest of which can host up to nine people. Depending on which house you book, you may get to enjoy your own fire pit, grilling area, or fenced-in playground. The accommodations are more similar to vacation rentals than a hotel, so while you won’t have access to an on-site restaurant or other typical amenities, you’re free to pick fruit or buy eggs and farm-fresh goods from the owners. Husky Meadows Farm, Connecticut Husky Meadows Farm, in rural Connecticut, has an original dairy barn (left) and a "cooking barn" where culinary workshops take place. The owners even stock each apartment’s fridge with local cheeses and wines as a delicious welcome gift. The focus of Seed & Spoon is food. Guests have their schedules booked with foraging excursions, farm tours, and cooking classes that incorporate the bounty picked up that day. Each two-night package also includes all meals (including wine), starting with a welcome dinner on Friday night and wrapping up with a Sunday brunch. Bee’s Knees Fruit Farm, California See Rates on Beeskneesfruitfarm.com Why We Chose It Bee’s Knees Fruit Farm is an impossibly cute property where fruit and flowers abound. Key Specs Free Wi-Fi: YesResort Fee: NoRoom Rate: $$$ Notable Amenities Full-service kitchen, Southern-style wraparound porch, laundry facilities Farm Overview The adorably-named farm in San Luis Obispo is one of the most charming places on California’s central coast. The current owner, Pattea Torrence, bought the property in 2019 and transformed the main house into an inn with three cozy, antique-filled bedrooms, a chef’s kitchen, and a living area with a fireplace. Guests can rent out the entire house or rent either the upper floor or bottom floor. All Bee’s Knees Fruit Farm visitors are also invited to pick fruit that’s in season during their visit, which may include peaches, plums, lemons, blackberries, apples, or figs. And since the farm is just a quick drive away from the coastline, that means you can easily enjoy your fruit as part of a beach picnic. Heritage Farm, Indiana Courtesy of Heritage Farm See Rates on Heritagefarmevents.com Why We Chose It Animal lovers should look no further than Heritage Farm, which has a cuddly collection of alpacas. Key Specs Free Wi-Fi: YesResort Fee: NoRoom Rate: $$ Notable Amenities Sonos speakers, free activities Farm Overview Located in Howard County, Indiana, this farm is home to more than 60 adorable Suri alpacas, as well as a flock of chickens, a horse, a black Labrador retriever, and several barn cats. Heritage Farm also has a wide variety of farm stay accommodations: a three-bedroom guest house, an 1850s log cabin, and a suspended treehouse tent. There’s also plenty of space if you want to bring your own tent or RV. Aside from helping out with farm chores, guests can wade in the nearby creek, take rides on the large platform swing, or soar down the 400-foot-long zip line. For a minimal fee, the owners will also lead you on a guided walk with the resident alpacas. At sunset, join the owners for a meet-and-greet happy hour and then ask them to cook you a pizza in their wood-fired oven. Mountain Goat Lodge, Colorado Courtesy of Mountain Goat Lodge, Colorado See Rates on Tripadvisor.com Why We Chose It Who wouldn’t want to mingle with dozens of baby goats on vacation? Mountain Goat Lodge offers all that, and more. Key Specs Free Wi-Fi: YesResort Fee: NoRoom Rate: $$ Notable Amenities Hot tub, pet-friendly rooms, cooking classes Farm Overview As its name suggests, Mountain Goat Lodge is another great option for animal lovers. When guests arrive, they receive a tour of the farm and get to meet the stars of the show: dozens of baby goats. Then they can book a few caprine classes, including a goat cheese making tutorial and an immersive four-hour lesson on raising and breeding goats. The icing on the cake is getting to play with 10 to 20 baby goats during a session of goat yoga. The farm has a few different lodging options available: traditional hotel rooms, a vintage trailer, retro campers, and a teepee. Each booking comes with breakfast every morning — a delicious homemade spread of biscuits and gravy, pastries, espresso drinks, and frittatas made with goat cheese sourced right on the farm. North Country Farms, Hawaii Courtesy of North Country Farms See Rates on Tripadvisor.com Why We Chose It With easy access to the beach and plenty of lush farmland to explore, North Country Farms boasts one of the most beautiful settings on this list. On the island of Kauai, North Country Farms is a four-acre slice of paradise that grows a variety of vegetables and herbs, plus orchard groves bearing avocados, mangoes, grapefruits, and more. The farm also raises chickens and shares their eggs with local families every week. The farm stay cottage is slightly rustic but still a lovely place to relax, with a covered lanai and verdant views from every window. While most visitors will spend their time exploring the farm or visiting the beach (the owners provide chairs and boogie boards), the cottage has plenty of comfortable spaces to unwind with a good book. The dark-wood living area also has a smart TV and impressive DVD collection for guests to view. Final Verdict You can find amazing farm stays all over the country. The properties in New England and the mid-Atlantic tend to be the most luxurious, like Beach Plum Farm in New Jersey and Husky Meadows Farm in Connecticut. You’ll find similar classy vibes at Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm in New Mexico, which has the added advantage of a full-service spa. But if you want to really get a taste of farm life, complete with barn chores and animal feedings, try the alpaca-heavy Heritage Farm in Indiana or Mountain Goat Lodge in Colorado. Know Before You Go Not sure how to pack for a farm stay vacation? A solid pair of waterproof boots is a good place to start. You’ve heard of farm-to-table restaurants, but farm stay properties take things to a literal (and delicious) level. If you can, try to book a stay at a food-focused inn to taste some of the freshest ingredients of your life.
