Now that summer—the season of street festivals, blooming flowers, and beach trips—is in top form, you can embrace the sunny season by breaking a sweat at some of Philly’s best outdoor attractions.

Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk

The new boardwalk perched over the Schuylkill River (between Center City and University City) is a fitness devotee’s dream. At 2,000 feet long and 15 feet wide, Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk has room for cyclists, runners, and walkers—plus overlooks with a view. It’s easily accessible from points throughout Center City, but with a path that juts out as far as 50 feet from the shore, the boardwalk feels like a world unto its own.

Outdoor Roller-Skating at SummerFest

For years, this space that houses a popular ice skating rink went unused during warm months. But this summer, the Blue Cross RiverRink has been reimagined as SummerFest, one of the country's only outdoor roller-skating rinks. Replace your morning run or ride with an hour of roller-skating, then fuel up at the boathouse-themed lodge with a menu curated by celebrity chef Jose Garces, or extend your workout with a powerwalk along the river to Spruce Street Harbor Park—another of Philadelphia’s best outdoor spaces.

Outdoor Yoga

For many, Philly brings to mind cheesesteaks and fanatical football fans, but this rapidly gentrifying city has embraced yoga like a zen master. Outdoor yoga is offered (often for free) in several of the coolest spots in the city: along the rivers (at

Race Street Pier, Schuylkill Banks and on stand-up paddleboards at Spruce Street Harbor Park), the stunning Art Museum, an arboretum, and—it wouldn’t be Philly without a little quirk—a cemetery.

Keep the burn going

Try a rooftop spin class, run the Art Museum’s ‘Rocky Steps,’ hula hoop at a pop-up park or learn to row on the river where the country’s largest collegiate regatta is held annually.
