Bhutan’s Joyful Reputation Captured in Four Photos
No plans for a trip to Bhutan? Take a tour through one of the happiest countries in the world with four photos that capture the culture's sense of joy.
A remote Buddhist kingdom set in the Himalayas, Bhutan is a destination that many travelers dream of visiting but few (just 1.1 million in 2014) actually do. It's known as one of the happiest in the world and those who take the trip often seek the secrets of a culture that has peace and contentment down pat.
To reflect that exuberance, Le Meridien Hotels & Resorts recently staged one of the nation’s first fine arts exhibits. In celebration of the brand's second hotel there, Starwood, Le Meridien's parent company, invited photographer Gray Malin to the capture the joy that’s said to radiate from the Bhutanese people.
The result was a creative collection featuring colorful balloons in unlikely places. For example, the photograph titled “Prosperity” shows hundreds of orbs busting out of a door and the art titled “Field of Dreams” highlights a bunch of vibrant balloons floating in an open field.
