Where in the world would you go if you could drop everything—right this minute—and what famous person would you invite along for the trip? That’s the question Travel + Leisure, the National Media Partner of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, asked celebrities arriving on the red carpet. To up the ante, interviewer Carlo Alberto Orecchia made stars pick celebrity strangers, rather than friends from their fashionably famous circles; Max Landes caught the whole thing on film.

Tom McCarthy, the director of Spotlight, answered our “loaded question” by saying he’d travel to Mongolia and drag along Elon Musk. “It’d be fun to spend time with a guy who has a totally different brain than I have.” McCarthy may not know what he’s getting himself into with adventurous Musk, unless he also enjoys casually walking on airplane wings while airborne.

Most of the stars, including actor Richard Brancatisano and director Lenny Abrahamson, are dreaming of far-flung islands and tropical destinations, like the Bahamas—with Emma Stone, of course—or the Maldives. Film critic Leonard Martin admits that his “go-to, gut answer to anything is Hawaii,” recalling a bumper sticker he saw claiming “the worst day on Maui is better than the best day on the mainland.” He’d kick back there with Jack Nicholson.

“I’d like to go on Johnny Depp’s boat,” said Elizabeth Banks. “I heard he has a nice boat—and his very pretty wife, she can come too. That’s fine.”

Asia is also a major attraction for stars like Straight Outta Compton’s O’Shea Jackson, Jr., who wants to see China with Kobe—“cause Kobe apparently runs China”—and Paul Dano (Love & Mercy). “Maybe I’d go to Japan,” said Dano, who would bring Jerry Garcia if the whole being-deceased-thing weren’t an issue.

Child actor Jacob Tremblay didn’t miss a beat: he’d head to Disneyland with Oscar Isaac, “because everything there now is Star Wars-themed.” He’s right.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be an award-winning celebrity to take a dream trip—or even to bed down in the same, sweet digs. Though we can’t promise they’ll tag along on your city bus tours or take you out on their fancy boats.
