Netflix Knows Exactly When You Get Hooked on a Show
You may not consciously recognize the moment you get hooked on a new show—but Netflix does.
Thanks to data pulled from users from six different continents between January 2015 and August 2016, the streaming service has identified a “hook episode” for different series. That's the episode at which point 70 percent of viewers will go on to complete the entire season.
If you're a well-versed Netflix user, you'll notice a slight trend: Many of the hook episodes include some sort of major event.
(Warning: Spoiler alert ahead.)
For example, “Gilmore Girls” hook is episode seven, which has the scene of Rory Gilmore's first kiss.
And “Stranger Things” hypnotizes viewers even sooner with episode two, when many mourned one particularly short-lived character.
“The hooked findings give us confidence that there is an appetite for original and unique content all of the world, which is why we're excited to deliver a variety in stories to our members, whether they're political dramas from France or musical dramas from the Bronx,” said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix, in a statement.
