You Can Rent the Glass Cube From Netflix's 'Black Mirror'
On June 5, Netflix dropped the fifth season of its dystopian show, Black Mirror. Though the season only came with three short episodes it was enough to get people talking, pulses racing and even gave fans (sort of) new music by Miley Cyrus. And, one unexpected thing it also gave viewers was a desire to travel to a remote glass cube in the middle of the desert.
In the second episode of the season, fans were introduced to Billy Bauer, CEO of the social media platform, Smithereen, which acts oddly like Facebook and Twitter. Without spoiling too much of the episode, Smithereen is going through a bit of a crisis, however, the board is unable to find its CEO as he’s on a 10-day silent meditation retreat in Utah. So, they track him down and lo and behold he’s in an absolutely stunning glass home overlooking a desert landscape that would indeed be ideal for escaping the world — and all connected devices — for a few days.
However, the Utah bit is just a ruse for the show. The glorious glass house is actually located in Grenada, Spain. And, it’s available for rent for both fans of the show and anyone looking to host their own silent retreat.
Officially known as the La Casa del Desierto, the house was actually built by Guardian Glass as a way to showcase the power of its glass product. According to the company, the glass structure can weather just about anything, including the hot and harsh climate in the Granada desert.
Those looking for a retreat will also find comfort too as the house comes with 215-square-feet of living space including one bedroom, one bathroom, and a living room. And, if you really can’t go off the grid that’s OK too as the home comes with solar-powered electricity so you can charge all the devices you want.
And don’t worry, the home isn’t too far away from civilization. As the company noted, it’s just a quick 15-minute drive to Gorafe village.
The house is currently available to rent for up to two nights for two people at just 150 euros ($169) a night. Make your reservations here as it’s booking up fast. (Just maybe leave your social media behind while you’re there.)
