In a recent Thomas Cook survey of British travelers, the good ol' U.S.A.—land of the deep-fried Twinkie—ranked only No. 4 as the most likely destination to make you gain weight. (Sure, we're still in the Top 5, but we'll take what we can get.)
Who made the top 3? Turkey, Portugal, and, in the top slot, Greece, where British travelers gain an average of 3.3 pounds during a 10-day visit. Talk about unfair: you can just picture well-intentioned travelers, mouths full of olives, giddily saying, "But it's the Mediterranean diet!! It's good for you!"
Overall, British men reported gaining about 5.5 pounds on vacation, while women put on about 1.5 pounds. But in some destinations—including Ireland, Canada and Germany—Brits actually lost weight. Maybe travelers to those places just walked a lot more. Otherwise, watch for next year's hot weight loss fad: The Beer and Spaetzle Diet.
