Summer Beach Essentials, Part 2
Just back from the Hamptons, T+L editorial assistant Katie James reveals her packing musts.
Nearly every Friday in July and August, I find myself toting a weekend bag to work—and rushing like mad to catch the 6 o’clock train en route to the Hamptons. Growing up, I spent summers out East, where I play golf in the morning, hang at the beach club in the afternoon, and eat dinner with family before heading to John Scott’s Surf Shack for a Corona with friends. And while my beauty regimen tends to be low maintenance out at the beach, I never leave home without these essentials:
La Prairie Foam Cleanser: I love feeling squeaky-clean after a day on the beach, where I often leave covered in sand and surf. This La Prairie formula provides a deep cleanse, and natural plant extracts counter balance for a soothing, moisturizing effect that keeps skin hydrated, and never dry. Not to mention the packaging and rosy scent are super luxurious. $80
Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush: I admittedly wasn’t a big sonic brush user, as tough bristles dried out my skin. This new model from Clinique, however, touts two types of antimicrobial bristles: the white, softer, to be used on cheeks; the green, angled and firmer, for hard-to-reach areas such as the T-Zone. Part of Clinique’s 3-step skin-care routine (cleansing, toning, and moisturizing), this brush has cleared my complexion—plus it’s easy to pack, and a single charge holds for three hours. $89.50
Make Up Forever Artist Liner in S-20, Satiny Navy Blue: My deep blue eye color pops against a summer tan, especially when I apply a navy liner. Make Up Forever’s collection of Artist Liners combines oil and wax for a smudge-proof finish that glides on easily. The line includes 15 hues in a range of finishes (matte, metallic, diamond, and more)—I especially love the hint of shine in “satin.” $19
Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow in Carré Bleu: A palette goes a long way when you’re looking to lighten an overnight shoulder bag. Long-lasting and blendable, this one offers a range of looks—from an evening-appropriate midnight blue (that pairs perfectly with the liner, above), to lighter tones, which I sported at an afternoon backyard barbecue. $60
Lancôme Grandiôse Mascara: I’ve been loyal to Lancôme Hypnôse for years, since it adds unbelievable volume to lashes, but for summer, I’m partial to this new synthetic formula, which can be layered (without clumping) depending on how full a look I want—I’ll throw on a few quick coats before the beach, or apply more thoroughly for a night out. The coolest feature? The wand’s bent shape makes mascara easier than ever to apply. $32
Kérastase Fluidissime Complete Anti-Frizz Spray: Growing up, my mom would splurge on Kérastase shampoo and conditioner to protect her color-treated hair—and I, in turn, would nip them from her bathroom. Needless to say I’ve inherited her routine, and love their new anti-frizz spray, which I’ll use before a quick pre-dinner blow dry for heat-protection, added shine, and a smell that earned me a lot of compliments. $42
Givenchy Le Vernis Intense Color Nail Lacquer in Bronze Insense and Givenchy Le Vernis Glittering Nail Lacquer and Top Coat in Parure Scintillante: These Givenchy polishes are a perfect way to mix up standard pink-and-red summertime nails. Bronze Insense is a shiny, coat-of-armor-esque lacquer that feels incredibly modern, but throw on Givenchy’s sparkle topcoat, and you’ve got a studio-worthy mani in under 10 minutes. $20 each
Nomaterra Getaway On-the-Go Eau Fraiche Fragrance Wipes Variety Pack: Aggie Burnett, a former beauty editor and founder of Nomaterra, recently introduced me to her pack of travel-friendly wipes (launching at Sephora in September), which offer three destination-inspired scents: Oahu Gardenia, Malibu Honeysuckle, and Miami Orange Blossom. Perfect for a weekend away—who wants to tote a heavy, glass fragrance bottle—I’ll dab the soft cloth on pulse points for a light yet long-lasting scent that’s instantly transporting. $20
Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask Champagne in Rose Gold: Summer sun can leave lips dry and cracked—enter Bite’s cult-favorite Agave Lip Mask, now in a fun, universal pink shade. The bio-active blend of healing antioxidants, including agave nectar and jojoba oil, is super nourishing and great to reapply throughout an afternoon on the beach. $26
