Chef's Tour: Boston Eats from Alden & Harlow's Michael Scelfo
Where to find the best food in Boston? The smaller, less-explored neighborhoods, where delicious local haunts are waiting to be uncovered, according to chef Michael Scelfo, whose buzzy new Cambridge restaurant, Alden & Harlow, opened in February. “For me, the perfect breakfast is at Arthur & Pats in Marshfield. It’s a timeless little beach shack on the water. The warm, old school service makes everyone feel like a regular. The Italian antipasti salad is a favorite, along with the crab cake benedict.
“Stop by Chinatown’s Hei La Moon for the best dim sum, and be sure to order the turnip cakes and pan-fried dumplings filled with shrimp and chives.
Afternoon Pick Me Up
“Cambridge’s Sofra café serves Middle Eastern baked treats and snacks like savory, herb-filled za’atar cake, warm buttered hummus, and basturma, an air-dried, cured beef. Try the earthquake cookie, made with dark cocoa—it’s super gooey and eye-roll good.
“Head into the town of Brookline and hit Fairsted Kitchen for some delicious comfort food, fantastic wine, and some of best hospitality you can get in the area. I like to order the roasted beets with chickpeas and feta, or the cauliflower anchovy and olive oil.
“Formaggio Kitchen is a shop in Huron Village with inspiring ingredients from all over the world—Xertoli olive oil, Italian garum, local maple sugar. I’m obsessed with a small glass case on one end of the cheese counter that’s filled with knives—I almost have to buy a new one on each visit.
