Vrbo just announced its Vacation Homes of the Year, and one Travel + Leisure reporter spent the night at the winning Palm Springs, California, rental.

It's time to book a vacation house for the summer, because Vrbo just announced its 2023 Vacation Homes of the Year. The "most exceptional vacation homes across the U.S.," as the home-sharing company calls them, are selected based on user ratings, among other criteria.

“This year’s Vacation Homes of the Year range from an urban oasis and a cozy ranch home under $400 a night, to a beachfront estate that can sleep the whole family and more,” John Gieselman, president of Expedia Brands (which owns Vrbo), said in a press release. “Every single Vacation Home of the Year has a beautiful view, and combined, boast seven private pools and fire pits, eight hot tubs, and even five putting greens.”

Vrbo’s Vacation Homes of the Year include the “Happy Roadrunner” in Phoenix with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and resort-style backyard, just minutes from the best activities the city has to offer. In Dripping Springs, Texas, the “Riverfront Hideaway” is set on five Hill Country acres with direct river access and a huge wraparound terrace that connects the open-concept living space with outdoor dining areas. “Trestle House,” in Winter Park, Colorado, is a ski-in/ski-out home just steps from the slopes, and only an hour-and-a-half drive from Denver.

This year’s bonus property, “Villa Luna Nueva,” is located in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It's the only vacation home on the list located outside the U.S. The striking rental offers an expansive patio, private pool, and secluded garden terrace. Located in the private gated community of Pedregal, the residence rental includes daily maid service and a concierge.

I recently had the opportunity to stay at the Palm Springs, California, Vacation Home of the Year, and even as a somewhat jaded travel writer who’s had the good fortune to stay at five-star properties around the world, I was wowed. Hidden from a quiet street by a long, high row of hedges, the front door is a portal to another world. The immediate view of the light-filled living room, high ceilings, pool, fire pit, and poolhouse lounge is truly breathtaking. Step outside for a backdrop of mountains and a tucked-away gleaming vintage 1953 Silver Streak trailer, fully furnished and ready for guests.

In a separate structure on the far side of the pool, a spa retreat is equipped with a sauna, steam room, and a waterfall tub in the center of a large room. The open lounge area boasts a fireplace, television, wet bar, and seating area. Nearby, there’s an outdoor rain shower, putting green, fire pit, pool table, ping pong table, and a covered area with a table seating 18.
