Best Backpacks for Disney Vacations

Travel + Leisure / Brian Kopinski

There are amusement park vacations, and then there are Disney park vacations. With more Disneyland and Disney World (plus Tokyo and Paris) trips under my belt than I can keep track of, I’m a firm believer that Disney parks are truly in a league of their own, both as a uniquely joy-inducing destination and as an overwhelming vacation to plan and navigate. In addition to researching your game plan and making reservations, you’ll need to plan out what you’ll bring — and I suggest starting with a Disney park-optimized backpack.

When you have a churro in one hand and your phone in the other, booking Lightning Lanes while power walking through Magic Kingdom, you’re going to need a comfortable, hands-free bag that keeps your essentials secure, organized, and protected from wet Orlando days or attraction splashes. While you need a backpack that meets Disney Parks’ size guidelines (no larger than 24 x 18 x 15 inches), my pro tip here is to go as small as you can go while still fitting in what you need for a day at Disney. This makes your life easier when getting on and off rides and isn’t as hard on your back after a long day walking and waiting in lines. If you need to go bigger, say for a diaper backpack or to stash warm layers or a change of clothes, look for bags made from lightweight materials with padded back panels and padded straps.

Our top pick is Dagne Dover’s Medium Dakota Neoprene Backpack, a tried-and-true favorite of mine with the comfort, durability, and water-resistance you need for the parks plus the organization, on-trend style, and capacity that make it ideal for commutes and travel beyond Disney. But if you're looking or a slim sling, a cooler bag, or something for kids to carry, we also rounded up the best backpacks for a Disney vacation.

Best Overall

Dagne Dover Dakota Neoprene Backpack

4.2
Dagne Dover Dakota Neoprene Backpack

Saks Fifth Avenue

Why We Love It
  • This lightweight, water-resistant backpack is comfortable and jam-packed with pockets and compartments for keeping your belongings organized at Disney and beyond.

What to Consider
  • The open side pockets only fit small bottles and the neoprene is prone to pilling where it rubs against your back.

Full disclosure, this is my favorite backpack for everything from daily commuting to traveling around Europe, but the features also make it uniquely qualified for a Disney park trip. Dagne Dover’s Dakota Neoprene Backpack comes in 10 stylish colors and three sizes — small, medium, and large — and, while they all meet Disney park size restrictions, I find medium to be the most versatile without being too bulky. Made of water-resistant, insulating, and washable neoprene, this cushy backpack has a padded back and padded adjustable straps so it’s ultra-comfy for a day at the parks.

What gives this backpack an extra edge is just how many travel and organization features it incorporates, while still looking chic enough to go from work to happy hour or from the airport to Sleeping Beauty’s castle. There’s a trolley sleeve, a removable shoe bag and zippered pouch, ample pockets, and a 13-inch laptop sleeve with elastic closure that equals the perfect safe spot for your mouse ears while on rides (as you’re probably not bringing a computer into Disney). On the exterior, the front zippered compartment includes pencil organizers, the two open side pockets can hold small bottles, and the two hidden zippered pockets on the back keep your phone and wallet safely tucked away. Inside, you have three zippered compartments and two side mesh pockets. My only issues with this bag are that the neoprene is prone to pilling where it rubs against my back — the company suggests using a fabric shaver — and the open side pockets only hold small water bottles and only if the bag isn’t stuffed too full.

Best Mini

Calpak Luka Mini Backpack

Calpak Luka Mini Backpack

Calpak

Why We Love It
  • While most mini backpacks are all form no function, this stylish backpack is packed with compartments including a hidden spot for valuables on the luggage sleeve and a roomy, zippered front compartment.

What to Consider
  • The side pockets may be too small for your water bottle and the straps are not padded (as is common with mini backpacks).

This water-resistant mini backpack is just the right size to hold your essentials for a Disney park trip while being small and lightweight enough to easily bring on rides all day long. Available in several neutral and seasonal color options, this puffer-style mini backpack manages to incorporate the kind of travel features typically only seen in larger bags, notably convenient organization, a luggage sleeve, and a tablet pocket. The interior has two zippered compartments and a mesh pocket, while the exterior includes a front zippered compartment, two open side pockets, and a hidden back zippered pocket that’s perfect for keeping valuables like your passport, money, or even phone safe.

While the straps aren’t padded, the nature of a mini backpack means as long as you don’t fill it with many heavy items, it should still be comfortable to wear for long periods. The open side pockets are too small for most water bottles, but they can be used for travel umbrellas or other small items like hand sanitizer or chapstick.

Best Large-capacity

Disney Mickey Mouse Travel Backpack

Disney Mickey Mouse Travel Backpack

Disney

Why We Love It
  • This roomy Disney-themed backpack has pockets galore, plus a padded back panel and padded straps for more comfortable all-day wear.

What to Consider
  • While polyester is naturally water-resistant, the brand doesn’t specify the level of protection it offers.

If you’re looking for a spacious backpack that can do double duty as a travel bag and a Disney vacation bag, this well-organized backpack meets the parks’ size requirements as well as most airlines’ personal item rules. With its bright blue color and subtle Mickey design, it’s fan-approved without going overboard. Thanks to its lightweight polyester material, padded back panel, and padded shoulder straps, you won’t have to sacrifice comfort for the extra room that can accommodate a laptop, extra clothing layers, diapers, sunscreen, and any other essentials you’d need on a trip.

The backpack is divided into three compartments: one in the back with a laptop sleeve and mesh pocket, a large center area with two buckled straps to keep clothing in place plus a large zippered mesh pocket you could use for dirty clothes, and a zippered front compartment with a smaller zippered pocket and open pocket to hold items like keys and sunglasses. Additionally, there are two small side zippered pockets on the exterior that are perfect for easily accessing your phone, hand sanitizer, or park tickets. Despite all these compartments, there isn’t actually a dedicated pocket for a water bottle and, while the material is a naturally water-resistant polyester, the brand doesn’t specify what level of protection it offers; keep this in mind if you plan a visit on a rainy day or if you’ll be riding the water attractions.

Best Sling

Vera Bradley Women's Recycled Lighten Up Reactive Mini Sling Backpack

Vera Bradley Women's Recycled Lighten Up Reactive Mini Sling Backpack

Amazon

Why We Love It
  • This water-repellant sling backpack includes two zippered pockets and can be worn crossbody or around the waist for convenient accessibility.

What to Consider
  • For low-profile design and comfort, you sacrifice capacity with this bag, which can only hold your top-priority essentials and a small water bottle.

Made of Vera Bradley’s water-repellant Reactive material — a lightweight polyester made from recycled plastic bottles — this small version of the brand’s standard-sized sling backpack offers two hands-free options for comfortably carrying your park essentials. With a 32.5-inch adjustable strap as well as a 10.5-inch removable strap extender, you can wear this sling crossbody or around your waist like a fanny pack. The main zippered compartment is big enough to hold a small water bottle and items like sunglasses, a wallet, and hand sanitizer, while the smaller front zippered pocket could hold your phone. There’s even a D-ring located on the strap that you could use for keys or other items using a carabiner.

While the standard-sized sling backpack offers a 8.5-liter capacity compared to the mini’s 3 liters, the low-profile design makes this smaller bag more comfortable and easier to wear for a day at the park.

Best Convertible

Freshly Picked Women's Convertible Classic Diaper Bag Backpack

Freshly Picked Women's Convertible Classic Diaper Bag

Freshly Picked

Why We Love It
  • This multipurpose bag can be worn as a backpack, crossbody, or purse, and has padded, adjustable straps for ease of wear.

What to Consider
  • The vegan leather exterior is described as “wipeable and spill resistant,” but this bag may not withstand a heavy rain day.

Not only could you use this as a diaper bag, this well-designed vegan leather backpack is just generally packed with the kind of features you look for in a Disney park bag. With a top handle, padded adjustable backpack straps, and an adjustable shoulder strap, you can comfortably wear it three ways: backpack, crossbody, or purse. It has metal feet on the bottom, so you don’t have to worry about it picking up dirt or germs at the park, and you can wipe the interior and exterior clean. It also comes with a machine washable changing pad. The exterior vegan leather is water-resistant, but it’s not waterproof for heavy rain days. Inside and outside, there are plenty of pockets for organization, including two large open side pockets for water bottles and an insulated interior pocket for keeping a beverage cool. Altogether, there are six interior and four exterior pockets, plus a handy key clip.

We love how this cream “Mickey Mania” design only hints at the famous mouse with custom zipper pulls, a simple silhouette on the front flap, and colorfully printed straps and interior. That said, with the high price point, you may want to choose one of the 10-plus non-thematic prints or colors for broader use. If you want to go all in, there are several fandom-specific designs to pick, including a Disney princess print and a polka dot Minnie Mouse print.

Price at time of publish: $199

The Details: 13 x 15 x 7 inches | 2.3 pounds | Water-resistant

Best for Kids

Simple Modern Disney Kids Backpack

4.7
Simple Modern Disney Kids Backpack for School

Amazon

Why We Love It
  • This water-resistant kids’ backpack is available in two sizes and more than 30 fun prints, including several Disney options.

What to Consider
  • The material is not waterproof, so keep that in mind if you plan on taking it on wet rides or carrying it on an especially rainy park day.

With more than 30 cute prints to choose from — including Disney designs like classic Mickey and Minnie, “Encanto,” Marvel superheroes, Pixar, and Disney princesses — any kid or toddler shouldn’t need convincing to wear this backpack on a Disney vacation. Made of a lightweight polyester with padded, adjustable shoulder straps that buckle closed, this backpack is a good choice for long days. There’s a padded tablet sleeve inside, two exterior zippered pockets, and notably, two expandable bottle sleeves on the sides for carrying water bottles. While the material is water-resistant (aka easy to wipe clean), it’s not waterproof, so you may want to relocate any electronics from the backpack if it’s going to get soaked from a water ride or rainy day.

There are two size options, a 12-liter medium one (recommended for kids ages 4 to 6) and a small 7-liter option (recommended for toddlers ages 2 to 3). With its spacious capacity, the larger medium option is not far off from the capacity of an adult backpack, so you’re able to fit a fair amount, like an extra clothing layer for watching the fireworks at night. Besides the overall dimensions and capacity differences, both sizes have identical features.

Price at time of publish: $40 for medium

The Details: 15.25 x 12.5 x 5.25 inches (medium), 14 x 11.75 x 4 inches (small) | 1.17 pounds (medium), 14.1 ounces (small) | 12 liters (medium), 7 liters (small) | Water-resistant

Best for Teens

Fjallraven Kanken Mini Classic Backpack

Fjallraven Kanken Mini Classic Backpack

Amazon

Why We Love It
  • With its timelessly cool design, this water-resistant mini backpack won’t weigh you down while still providing enough space to stash park-day necessities.

What to Consider
  • A water bottle won’t fit in the outer side pockets, so you’ll need to use up some of the limited interior capacity to store a bottle.

Fjällräven’s Kånken backpack may have been created in 1978, but the Swedish brand has stood the test of time when it comes to delivering a cool product that’s still popular for teens and adults alike. Available in more than 60 colors (not to mention special edition and custom color combos), this mini version of the original Kånken backpack is made of a lightweight, water-resistant Vinylon F fabric and is just the right size to comfortably carry your Disney park necessities from ride to ride. The front zippered pocket can hold small items like your phone or keys and, while the side pockets are too small for water bottles, they’d work perfect for sunglasses or hand sanitizer. There’s an interior sleeve you can use for a small tablet that also holds a removable seat pad — this helps cushion your back from the contents of the bag, but it’d also come in handy when you’re waiting for a parade or fireworks to start.

The adjustable shoulder straps are made to work for kids and adults, so there’s a clasp you can use to keep the excess out of the way when you need to shorten them. This is also helpful if you want to carry the bag by the top handles that snap closed. While the straps aren’t padded, the small size of the backpack means there’s less likelihood that it will be too heavy for hours of use.

Price at time of publish: $80

The Details: 11.4 x 7.9 x 5.1 inches | 8 ounces | 7 liters | Water-resistant

Best Waterproof

Rains Book Backpack

Rains Book Backpack

Saks Fifth Avenue

Why We Love It
  • This sleek, fully waterproof backpack has a zippered exterior pocket and padded back panel.

What to Consider
  • There’s no water bottle sleeve, and it’s on the larger size compared to other backpacks in this list.

This attractive backpack incorporates the features you look for in a Disney park bag, while being good-looking enough to work well as a commuter or travel bag, too. The top selling point here is that it’s fully waterproof, not just water-resistant, for those super rainy days or water attractions. The bigger size (still within Disney park requirements) means it will be bulkier on rides and could get heavy if you fill it too full, but it also means it has a high capacity for stashing large items like a sweatshirt or change of clothes in case you need a dry alternative.

If it does get heavy, the padded adjustable straps and padded mesh back panel are comfortable added features. There’s a large zippered pocket in the front for easy access to a phone or wallet, as well as a padded laptop sleeve in the interior for a 13-inch laptop or iPad — handy for travel days. And, while you won’t find a water bottle sleeve, there’s plenty of room in the main compartment to store one (or two).

Best Budget

Himawari Laptop Travel Backpack

Himawari Laptop Travel Backpack

Amazon

Why We Love It
  • This bag has a detachable USB cable to charge your phone and a large capacity for bulky items like sweatshirts, laptops, and water bottles.

What to Consider
  • You’ll need to buy the power bank separately to charge your phone with the included USB port.

Available in more than 30 colors and two sizes, this wallet-friendly and rain-friendly (waterproof!) backpack incorporates smart features for Disney visits, commutes, and flights alike. We’re recommending the smaller of the two (with an 18-liter capacity) but note that this spacious bag can make for a tiresome day at the park if you pack it with heavy items. The size is helpful for bulky, lightweight things like clothing and mouse ears, and the padded back panel and padded straps help with comfortability.

The interior includes a pocket for a 13-inch laptop and two open pockets, while the exterior has a zippered pocket and two open side pockets for water bottles. It also includes a built-in detachable USB cable for charging your phone while it’s in the exterior side pocket (a must for making sure your phone doesn’t die before the end of a long day at Disney!). However, the power bank is not included, so you’ll have to buy that separately to utilize this feature.

Best for Babies

Petunia Pickle Bottom Method Backpack

Petunia Pickle Bottom Method Backpack

Amazon

Why We Love It
  • With 10 interior and exterior pockets, this diaper backpack is ready for a day at Disney thanks to its lightweight material, padded straps, and D-rings for attaching to a stroller.

What to Consider
  • The vegan leather material is thin so this backpack doesn’t hold a structured shape when empty and could be more susceptible to scratches.

Available in six pretty and modern Disney-themed prints, including this understated gray Mickey pattern, Petunia Pickle Bottom’s diaper backpack is a smartly designed bag that looks good while going above and beyond with convenient, park-perfect features. Starting with its roomy 25.8-liter capacity and 10 pockets, you’ll have plenty of space to carry wipes (the bag includes a wipes case), diapers, a changing pad (it also comes with a removable, washable one), extra baby clothes, toys, and more. In addition to the three open interior pockets, there are two felt-lined, zippered pockets for keeping your phone, keys, and wallet safe, and notably, there are four open pockets around the exterior, two of which are insulated for water bottles, baby bottles, and other sealed drinks. It also comes with a removable zippered coin purse — there’s a spot for everything!

This backpack is made of a lightweight (and water-resistant) vegan leather and includes padded straps for comfort. You can also use the D-rings to attach it to a stroller with the brand’s Valet Stroller Clips (sold separately). While that leatherette doesn’t add heft, the thin fabric is more susceptible to scratches and other damage than thicker, more durable materials like neoprene and nylon, and it doesn’t hold a structured shape when empty.

Best Cooler

Igloo 20-can Limited Edition Disney Soft Sided Tote Bag

Igloo 20-can Limited Edition Disney Soft Sided Tote Bag

Amazon

Why We Love It
  • This roomy backpack cooler also has a zippered front pocket and two expandable side slip pockets for dry storage.

What to Consider
  • The majority of the space is for use as a cooler, so if you are unable to fit all your dry valuables in the front zippered pouch, you’ll need to bring an additional bag.

With handles and padded straps, this lightweight backpack cooler is great for a full day at Disney. The insulated main compartment fits 24 cans, and the bag also incorporates an exterior zippered pouch for dry valuables and two expandable side pockets for reusable bottles or other small items. The interior is foam-insulated for keeping food and beverages cool during hot park days, as well as leak-resistant, so you could also use it to hold wet umbrellas on rainy days. It also has an antimicrobial liner that you can wipe clean.

While we appreciate the compartments for dry essentials, you should note that if your valuables (i.e. phone, wallet, etc.) don’t all fit in the zippered pouch, you may need to bring an additional bag. Keep in mind Disney parks don’t allow you to bring in loose ice cubes or dry ice, so you’ll need to have room for reusable ice packs to keep items cool.

Price at time of publish: $50

The Details: 12 x 8 x 15 inches | 13.92 ounces | 14 liters | Water-repellent

Best Packable

Paravel Fold-Up Backpack

paravel-fold-up-backpack

Bloomingdale's

Why We Love It
  • This backpack has the upperhand when it comes to style, organization, and travel since the full-sized bag folds into a small pouch.

What to Consider
  • There isn’t a designated water bottle pocket, but there is enough room to fit more than one in the main compartment.

A bag that can fold into a small, self-contained pouch is incredibly convenient for traveling, especially if you’re going somewhere like a Disney park where you may end up with souvenirs you’ll have to squeeze into your luggage. What you don’t often see, however, is a foldable bag with smart travel features and an attractive design like Paravel’s Fold-Up Backpack. Made of a nylon created by upcycling plastic bottles, this backpack is water-resistant and ultra-lightweight, making it ideal for a Disney park day, rain or shine.

The straps are adjustable but not padded, which is common with other foldable backpacks and isn’t a major issue since the bag weighs less than a pound. Inside, there’s more than enough room for a 15-inch laptop (plus a zippered pocket), while on the outside there’s a roomy compartment that easily fits a phone, wallet, and keys. There’s even a trolley sleeve for saving your back on travel days. While there isn’t a designated water bottle pocket, there’s plenty of room to fit one (or more) in the main compartment. Did we mention it folds into a small, flat pouch around the size of a Kindle?

Price at time of publish: $75

The Details: 13 x 16 x 9 inches (6 x 6.5 x 2.5 inches when folded) | 13 ounces | Water-resistant

Best Splurge

Tumi Voyageur Kileen Convertible Sling Bag

Tumi Voyageur Kileen Convertible Sling Bag

Bloomingdale's

Why We Love It
  • With strategically placed pockets for hands-free convenience, this sleek sling bag has a convertible strap for wearing as a backpack as well as crossbody.

What to Consider
  • You’re limited on how much you can fit into this smaller capacity bag, especially if you use the front open pocket for a water bottle.

If you’re going to splurge on a bag for a Disney vacation, we suggest opting for a trusted brand and selecting a versatile style that can be dressed up or down for a range of travel scenarios. Tumi’s Voyageur Kileen Convertible Sling Bag meets all these requirements, and even includes a 5-year warranty. Made of water-resistant nylon, this small sling is durable, lightweight, and chic enough to wear to a nice dinner while still packing a punch when it comes to Disney park-approved organization.

The adjustable strap can be zipped to wear crossbody or unzipped to wear as a backpack not just for style options, but also to help with weight distribution on a long Disney day. The back mesh pocket is padded for comfort and makes for an easily accessible phone pocket, while there’s also a hidden front zippered pocket angled for ease of use while the bag is worn crossbody. There’s an open front pocket with a magnetic snap closure and water-resistant lining that could be used for a water bottle, but keep in mind it will eat into the overall storage space with a small-capacity sling. Inside, there’s another zippered pocket perfect for small valuables as well as a key strap. This little bag packs a lot in!

Price at time of publish: $350

The Details: 12.8 x 8 x 3.3 inches | 1.1 pounds | Water-resistant

Tips for Buying a Backpack for Disney

Stay within the size limit

Disney World and Disneyland rules mandate that all bags (including backpacks, suitcases, and coolers) can’t exceed 24 x 18 x 15 inches so, if you’re buying a backpack for a Disney vacation, you’ll need to stay within these dimensions. When factoring in comfort and ease of use, we’d suggest you choose the smallest bag that still fits what you need for a day at the park — no one wants to lug a huge bag on and off attractions all day long.

Prioritize comfort

A long day or stretch of days on your feet, waiting in lines and covering some serious mileage (especially at Disney World) — all in potentially hot weather — wreaks havoc on your body. So a comfortable backpack is an absolute must for a Disney trip. Keeping your bag size small helps limit how full you can fill it, but the weight of the bag and its contents will make a bigger difference. Average backpacks weigh around 3 pounds, and we’ve only selected backpacks that weigh 2 pounds or less. Additionally, you’ll want to look for padded straps and a padded back panel on mid- to large-capacity backpacks to help with a heavier load.

Look for water resistance

If you’re heading to Disney, it’s always good to choose a backpack that’s at the very least water-resistant. Even those of us with the best of intentions to stay dry at a Disney park can be foiled by an errant splash on Pirates of the Caribbean or Frozen Ever After, and when the summer temps rise, water attractions like Grizzly River Run and Kali River Rapids start looking especially tempting despite the very real possibility you’ll get drenched.

For water-ride-lovers or anyone visiting a Disney park during the rainy season, you may want to really ensure your belongings stay dry with a fully waterproof backpack. Wet days are more of the norm at Disney World in Orlando, while in Anaheim, Disneyland’s more infrequent rainy days tend to clear out the park, making for a fun, crowd-free experience if you come prepared with waterproof gear.

Think about insulation

When you’re bringing food, drinks, baby formula, snacks, or medicine that needs to stay cold into a Disney park, you’ll want to look for an insulated backpack or one with at least an insulated compartment. Loose or dry ice is not allowed into Disney parks, so you’ll want to bring reusable ice packs instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Can I bring food and drinks into a Disney park?

You are allowed to bring your own food and nonalcoholic drinks into Disneyland and Disney World parks, as long as you let a security cast member know when you enter the park and follow a few specific guidelines. With the exception of small containers such as baby food jars, glass containers are not allowed. You also can’t bring in anything that requires heating, reheating, processing, refrigeration, or temperature control, as well as anything with a “pungent odor.”

  • What should I pack in my backpack for a Disney park?

Your backpack’s size will determine how many of these essentials you’re able to pack, but really you should be able to fit the top priority items into a sling backpack or bum bag, which is my personal go-to as a frequent Disney park goer. We recommend starting with a phone charger, slim card case or wallet, sunglasses, hand sanitizer, bandaids, sunscreen, and medicine (i.e. motion sickness relief, pain reliever, and chewable Pepto Bismol). If you can’t fit a refillable water bottle in your backpack, we recommend a collapsible water bottle or cup that can be hooked with a carabiner to the outside of your bag.

When you’re packing a backpack with a larger capacity, we’d suggest bringing a sweatshirt in case it cools off in the evening (this is important at Disneyland if you plan to stay for the fireworks), a small umbrella, a hat or visor, a packable poncho for rain or water rides, and snacks like trail mix. If kids are joining, you may want to toss in some coloring books, toys, and a tablet for long ride lines. Oh, and of course, you can’t forget your mouse ears!

  • What material is good for a backpack?

We’ve selected mostly backpacks that are polyester, nylon, or vinyl, all common materials due to their natural durability and water resistance. Vegan leather is also water-resistant, lightweight, and easy to clean, and our top pick is actually a Dagne Dover backpack made of neoprene, which is supersoft, durable, water-resistant, and even machine washable. When you’re looking for a waterproof backpack that can withstand an Orlando downpour or a wild ride on Grizzly River Run (don’t say we didn’t warn you), look for materials coated with thermoplastic or polyurethane like Rains signature PU-coated waterproof fabric.
