Aug. 16 is finally here, and that can only mean one thing: it's National Rum Day.
Whatever your feelings are on "fake" holidays, there's no denying the fact that Americans love their rum. In fact, Bacardi and Captain Morgan are two of the 10 most popular spirits in the United States, according to YouGov.
To celebrate one of our favorite alcoholic drinks — and live up beach vibes while summer's still here — we've rounded up 11 bars and hotels in the US and Puerto Rico that are offering special deals and promotions on Thursday.
So sit back, relax, and enjoy a cocktail or two to get you through the rest of the week.
Bahama Breeze: The Caribbean-inspired U.S. chain is offering several rum deals. Now through Aug. 16, you can get $4 Painkillers (Pusser’s dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple and orange juices, and ground nutmeg); $3 Bahama Mamas (Bacardi Black and Castillo Silver rums, Leroux banana liqueur, pineapple and orange juices, and Cruzan coconut); and $2 rum and Cokes.
New York City
Monarch Rooftop Bar: In celebration of National Rum Day, the iconic rooftop lounge is offering buy one, get one free watermelon, mango, and coconut mojitos for $18. You can also mix it up by ordering a Coco-Lada, Monarch’s take on the piña colada, for $10 a drink.
The Rum House: At one of the best cocktail bars in New York City, happy hour runs everyday from 12-6 p.m. — but on National Rum Day, happy hour lasts until 4 a.m. In honor of the occasion, the bar will also run a special cocktail menu featuring its very best rums.
Refinery Rooftop: Refinery Rooftop is celebrating National Rum Day on Friday this year. In collaboration with the Tipsy Scoop, the bar is giving away free piña colada strawberry daiquiri swirl sundaes — with an extra splash of Malibu rum — to the first 50 customers who arrive after 5 p.m.
The Grass Skirt: This tiki bar has over 175 varieties of rum to choose from — and you can purchase them at a discounted price during the National Rum Day “Half-off the Rum Wall” promotion. While you’re there, be on the lookout for the dim sum cart so you can pair your cocktails with savory bites.
Havana 1920: From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Cuban bar is offering a curated list of half-off rums, as well as a specialty Matusalem & Company rum flight.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Sheraton San Juan Hotel and San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino: Take your love of rum down to the Caribbean and sign up for one of these hotels’ rum-themed tours. Options include the “Sip & Savor Cocktail” tour, which includes a stop at the local bar where “Despacito” was filmed, as well as the “Casa Bacardi” tour of the largest premium distillery in the world.
Galley at Hilton West Palm Beach: Head to the hotel lobby between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. for a complimentary rum cocktail, including an Aged Rum & Honey and a Light n’ Sandy. Continue the rum day festivities inside the hotel bar for special appetizer and cocktail pairings and live steel drum music.
Burlock Coast: The Ritz-Carlton’s Fort Lauderdale restaurant comes with its very own Rum Room and over 150 types of rum — and for National Rum Day, Burlock Coast is one-upping itself with rum punch for $5. Since the holiday lands on Tapas Thursday, you can pair your cocktail with $1 oysters and $5 tapas between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. this year.
