Now is the perfect time to work on that green thumb.

The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is currently closed to in-person events and on-site activities for the forseeable future due to the coronavirus outbreak, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy NYBG’s unique programming from home.

NYBG announced on April 7 it’s expanded list of online classes that anyone can take over Zoom. Not only can people take these classes to level up their gardening skills, but also learn how to paint, draw, do crafts, or expand their general knowledge of botany or horticulture.

Some of the newest classes include sessions with a Horticultural Therapist on how to use nature to manage your stress –—which can be essential during such a difficult time. Or, if you’re looking for a way to pass the time and gain a new skill, NYBG also has classes on basic gardening, growing tomatoes, growing a “victory garden,” rooftop gardening, small-space gardening, and growing your own vegetables.

For those who don’t have access to a place where they can grow their own vegetables, fruits, or other plants, there are also a number of arts and crafts classes like spring tulip watercolor painting, how to ferment your own vegetables, beginner watercolor, floral embroidery, recognizing bird songs, identifying flowers, and floral design.

Many of these classes can range in price depending on the length and intensity of the instruction. For example, NYBG’s Vegetable Gardening class costs $289 for non-members while the horticultural therapy class is only $55 for non-members. Many classes range between $100 and $300, though some cost upwards of that. Members of the New York Botanical Garden also receive a discount.

A complete list of NYBG’s online classes and courses is available through the NYBG at Home website. Or, for more information and to register for classes, go to the NYBG Adult Education page on its website.
