You Can Stay in an Actual Sand Castle in the Netherlands
If you've ever wanted to spend a night in an actual sand castle, start planning your trip to next year's Zandsculpture Festival. Sand castle builders and quirky hotel aficionados alike will appreciate the Zand Hotel—an installation of sorts that celebrates the area's annual sand castle competition. The building is a dead ringer for a sand castle from the outside: The sand walls are reinforced with a wooden core, but you'd never guess that from looking at it. The 60-room space features non-sand furniture (for good reason), as well as various pieces of sand art decor. A group from Global PowWow built the hotel in the four weeks leading up to the event.
Like any other good sand castle, this hotel won't last—but this time, it's intentional. Zand will be around the entirety of this year's festival, but there are plans to recreate the project for next year's event. Good thing, considering all reservations for the 2015 festival (which runs through September 20th) are already accounted for. You can learn more about the Zand Hotel on its website.
