The T+L Carry-On: Costume Designer Janie Bryant's Travel Essentials
Welcome to the first installment of our new series, the T+L Carry-On, where we take a look inside the luggage of those who find themselves frequently traveling around the world—and gain a few expert tips along the way. This week, we sat down with Emmy award-winning costume designer and Hartmann brand ambassador Janie Bryant (Mad Men, Deadwood) and learned about the importance of always wearing a shoe with a zipper to the airport, the longevity of Hartmann luggage, and how every traveler should always be sure to pack an extra pair of "unmentionables"— just in case.
Tell us about your relationship with travel.
"I travel quiet a bit, both for business and pleasure. For work, I mostly travel back and forth from Los Angeles to New York City. I love to go to NYC for design inspiration that I see in the street culture as I'm usually running around like crazy from morning to night. I am truly energized when I'm there—NYC is a city that never sleeps! When traveling for pleasure, I am usually headed down south as my family lives in Tennessee and Florida. My most recent vacation was on a tiny island in Mexico called Holbox—it's undiscovered and rustic. The food is amazing, the people are lovely, the nature is gorgeous and the beaches are beautiful. I absolutely loved it."
What are your carry-on must haves?
"I always travel with my Hartmann passport jacket to keep my passport and boarding pass organized – it's even monogrammed! Also, usually a script, my iPad safe inside my Hartmann Large Pocket Clutch, an extra pair of shoes, a fashion magazine, my go-to Versace sunglasses, a Chanel compact, a Christian Lacroix sketch pad, Oribe texturizing spray, my Hartmann card case for my ID, Chanel travel size scents and an extra pair of "unmentionables" in case my luggage ever gets lost."
What are the travel beauty products you can't live without?
What's the perfect "look" for traveling? Do you have any styling tips?
"I like to wear all black when I fly. It makes it easy and still looks very chic. I like to wear my HSN leggings and travel with a wrap. If I get cold on the plane, which I always do, I will use it for a blanket or a scarf around my neck. For shoes I like to wear a shoe or boot with a zipper. It makes it easy to take off and put back on when going through security and mine are always with heels."
What type of luggage do you recommend for those looking to invest in something timeless?
"My current favorite is my Hartmann Denovo carry-on. I love the ivory color, it's so chic and it's lightweight with smooth gliding spinner wheels. I've been carrying Hartmann Luggage since I was 15 years old."
Do you have any travel rituals or traditions?
"As a gift, my mother and father bought me Hartmann luggage for my first trip to Europe when I was 15. Later when I moved to Paris, I of course, took my Hartmann luggage again. The suitcase was super glamorous—it was this beautiful black suitcase with black wool and black leather. Now when I travel anywhere, I still travel with Hartmann luggage. It's a family tradition."
What are some of the places on your travel bucket list?
"I'd like to Kenya and go on safari. I'm dying to go to Bora Bora, Moorea, and Tahiti to see the beaches and water there. India and Turkey are on my list, as well as Egypt to sail down the Nile and see the Pyramids. I'd also like to visit Morocco again to take a weeklong trip into the desert on camel back. I love a great adventure and to experience other cultures."
And what does your 2016 have in store?
"I am really looking forward to an exciting 2016—it's filled with additional design capsules and working toward further building the Janie Bryant brand. This year, Telenovela starring Eva Longoria debuted on NBC, which I costume designed. I'm also designing a pilot for Amazon called The Last Tycoon."
