Traffic on the Lachine Canal (Parks Canada, 514/283-6054; www.parcscanada.gc.ca/canallachine), which cuts through the heart of Montreal, began in 1825, but the nine-mile waterway has been boat-free for years. In May, it finally reopened to pleasure craft. Rent a kayak or board a shuttle boat to cruise past parks, city markets, and 19th-century warehouses.
