Mexico City’s Coyoacán district—of Frida fame—has a brand-new cantina. Co-owned by Y Tu Mamá También star Diego Luna, La Bipolar (155 Malitzin, Coyoacán; 52-55/5484-8230; dinner for two $30) serves upgraded classics (rib-eye tacos, marlin tostaditas) by Lula Martin del Campo, known for her menus for the Hotel Habita. Inside, the hip design enlists circular butcher blocks as stools and tables, and tinas (aluminum laundry baskets) as lamp shades. Cult-chic Mexican fashion heroes NaCo are developing weekly after-hours fiestas; expect a cool but casual crowd and a welcome lack of the are-you-on-the-list ’tude endemic to Mexico City hot spots.
La Bipolar is one of the city’s most star-studded cantinas, as A-list Mexican actor Diego Luna co-owns this funky fabulous restaurant and bar. Situated in an aging building on a tree-lined Coyoacán boulevard, “La B” doesn’t look like a hot hangout for Mexico’s brightest stars. Once inside, however, the place is full of contemporary kitsch such as butcher block tables and plastic crates on the walls. Start with a refreshing mezcal cocktail and some crunchy Lebanese-style potato chips with peppers, lemon, and paprika. Regulars come for the many vegetarian options and innovative dishes such as marlin tostaditos.
