The city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is in the midst of a real estate and hotel boom, and accordingly, the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is dropping a cool $450 million dollars on a modernization and expansion project for Terminal 4. The airport, which offers more than 600 flights a day, has seen international traffic triple in the last decade, while fares to FLL average 21 percent less than Miami International Airport, a half hour’s drive away.
This past week, the airport unveiled Concourse G at Terminal 4—the first new concourse in over a decade. It’s in synch with the contemporary age of airports, with free Wi-Fi and numerous charging stations for iPods and smart phones. Eventually, 14 gates will be in place at Concourse G. Most of them will be “swing gates,” i.e., able to handle both domestic and international flights.
Concourse G is part of the first phase of the expansion program for Terminal 4; the second phase will be finished in mid-2018. On the horizon, the roughly 34,000-square-foot concession area (an increase from the current 2,000-square-foot offerings) will have a Casavana Cuban Cuisine—in step with South Florida’s Latin flavor—and a Hoffman’s Chocolates, as well as more restaurants, vendors and shopping options.
In 2016, a bridge to Terminal 3 will be completed, allowing quick connections to domestic flights for international travelers post-security: passengers will only have to withstand airport security once.
