While Greece’s Economy Breaks, Interest in Tourism Booms
As Greece's economy teeters on the edge of collapse, pragamatic travelers plan their next Greek getaway.
In case you haven’t heard, Greece is having some major financial woes. While the world—and Greeks—anticipates the Mediterranean country’s decision to return to the pre-Euro drachma, the world has been frantically searching for ways to take advantage of what could be a very agreeable exchange rate.
Google confirms that searches for travel to Greece are at a 10-year high: similar to a 2005 peak likely caused by the country’s austerity budget. And as our sparkle chart shows, the web is buzzing with searches related to Greece, ranging from questions like “What will the drachma be worth” to broader questions on the euro, Tsipras’ comments about the referendum, and “what is happening in Greece?”

But opportunistic travelers are obviously preparing to pounce on affordable hotel rates and cheap glasses of poolside Oúzo.
Google Trends shows an enormous spike in searches for “Greece Holiday,” coming largely from Brits who are clearly dreaming of Santorini’s whitewashed houses and lapis lazuli church domes. The search “Flights to Santorini “ is at a breakout-high, while “Flights to Greece” and “Vacation in Greece” are soaring more than 100 percent than average.
Of course, anxious Greeks are doing a bit of Googling on their own. Flights from Greece is gaining momentum now, too.
If you thought Greece was already a bargain destination, get ready. The Aegean country is poised to be the next deal breaker. And that’s good news for holiday-goers, as well as Greeks. The country’s economy could need a serious boost from tourism dollars.
