Behind the Scenes in One of the Only Studios Still Making Hand-Crafted Globes
Globes may not be the travel planner of choice anymore (were they ever?), but there's no denying that they've become a symbol of worldly adventure. We've all dreamed of setting the desk fixture spinning, stopping it with the force of a single pointed finger; viola, the destination for your make-believe vacation. As it turns out, there aren't many people still making globes. Bellerby & Co. Globemakers is one of the few companies in the business.
It all started when founder Peter Bellerby embarked on the hunt for a birthday present for his father with very little success. As some gifted DIYers tend to do, he decided to make his own after finding a total absence of options. Years later in 2008, he decided to start a business with his globe-making knowledge. Fast forward a couple of years and Bellerby & Co.'s creations have been used in Hollywood movies and hosted its own globe exhibition in 2012. For more information on the company—and how to make a globe—check out the video above.
