Food halls have opened across the world—from Mathallen in Oslo to the David Jones Food Hall in Sydney to the many iterations of the trend that have taken New York City’s food scene by storm, including Smorgasburg, Gotham West Market, Industry City, and Anthony Bordain’s forthcoming foray into the form.
Now Baltimore is getting in on the action with a new food hall opening in Charm City this week. Although many visitors to Baltimore tend to stick to the city’s bustling Inner Harbor, the new Mount Vernon Marketplace is within easy walking distance of the Baltimore Art Museum and is worth the downtown detour.
The marketplace’s offerings include dumplings from Pinch, raw bar from the Local Oyster (the traveling oyster bar’s stand is its first permanent shucking digs), and salads from Ful Café. Delights by Mina is serving West African specialties like chicken yassa (chicken that’s been marinated for 48 hours in lemon juice and mustard), and dessert lovers can head for Micha’s sorbet and a cup of coffee from Annapolis’ Ceremony Coffee, among many other treats.
Mount Vernon Marketplace is a great addition to Baltimore’s food scene, but residents will probably find the concept of a food hall familiar. After all, the city has been home to the World Famous Lexington Market since 1782—long enough for everyone to get used to the “new” concept.
