Watch a 300-pound Gorilla Dance Like No One's Watching
However, because this is the internet age, people weren’t happy with the video simply showing Zola dancing in silence. Instead, people began adding their own soundtracks to take things up a notch, including, of course, the classic tune “Flashdance ... What A Feeling.”
And while Zola is without question having a blast, the zoo noted on its ZooTube page that there's a lot more to this behavior than you may think.
“Enrichment helps enhance the environment and lives of animals, like Zola, by providing them with mental and physical stimulation to increase natural behaviors,” the zoo wrote. “Enrichment can take many forms, but for this spunky great ape, it means playing and spinning in his favorite blue pool!”
Amazingly, this isn’t the first time Zola has gone viral for his moves. In 2011, when Zola lived at the Calgary Zoo, another video surfaced showing him twirling, dropping and breakdancing to the beat in his own head.
“He's just having a really, really good time,” Garth Irvine, Zola's keeper in Calgary, told Discovery. “This is the type of play you would see from children.”
