A Kangaroo Was Captured on Video Hopping Through Near-empty Streets of Adelaide in South Australia

Warning: Kangaroo crossing

As COVID-19 has forced Adelaide, an Australian city of about 1.3 million people, to shut down much like the rest of the world, one kangaroo didn’t get the message. Instead, the marsupial was captured on video hopping through the near-empty city streets.

“Protective Security Officers tracked a suspect wearing a grey fur coat hopping through the heart of the #adelaide CBD this morning. He was last seen on foot heading into the West Parkland,” the South Australia Police jokingly tweeted, adding the hashtags “#animaltakeover #whatsthatskip #kangaroo #cityslicker.”

The video, posted over the weekend, has been viewed 42,000 times and racked up more than 1,000 likes.

"It was quite unique," a police spokesperson told CNN.

As of Tuesday, Australia recorded more than 6,500 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to Johns Hopkins University, which tracks the virus around the world. In South Australia, where Adelaide is located, there are just over 430 confirmed cases.

Turns out, it’s appropriate that the kangaroo chose Adelaide to explore: the city was originally called Tarntanya, which translates to "red kangaroo place," according to the city's tourism guide

But Adelaide isn’t the only place where wild animals have taken advantage of the coronavirus pandemic (and the lack of crowds).

In South Africa, lions were seen lying down in the middle of a Kruger National Park road, and in Yosemite National Park in California, black bears are reclaiming the land and trees. Never mind the goats that took over this town in Wales.

And if there aren’t cool animals running through your city, there are plenty of ways to experience animal encounters from the comfort of your living room. Go on a virtual game drive and spot elephants through live camera feeds in Africa, or learn about animals like sharks and pandas with Google’s AR Animals feature.
