I still have my very first pair of hiking shoes from eighteen years ago. My husband and I were heading out to Yellowstone National Park on our first camping and hiking trip as a couple and he took me to REI to purchase what he called “real hiking shoes”. I distinctly remember trying out several pairs to find the right one. He made me walk all over the store and up and down the small incline ramps to simulate hiking uphill and downhill to see if they fit. They have been my trusted hiking shoes ever since and have served me well over the years on multiple outdoor adventures.

As an avid outdoor enthusiast, I love the freedom of exploring in the wilderness, and I am always on the lookout for a great pair of hiking boots that are lightweight, comfortable, will not fall apart on the trail, and will stand up to the pair I’ve had for nearly two decades. I recently had the opportunity to try out the Altra Lone Peak All Weather Hiking Boots, and I was game to try out something new. I’ll admit, the one thing that I don’t enjoy is breaking in my hiking shoes before a backcountry camping or hiking trip — but, luckily, this pair required no break-in period and was comfortable right from the start.

Earlier this summer I found myself preparing for a backcountry group camping and hiking trip. The plan was to hike the trails in White River National Forest in Colorado to explore the area and camping in the backcountry. I got the Altra hiking boots a couple of days before my trip and the first thing I noticed was how light the package was. My initial thought was that the box was empty — perhaps a mix-up at the store. At just twelve ounces, these boots were so much lighter than my old pair, which was shocking. Could such a lightweight hiking boot hold its own on the trails? When I tried them, I didn’t want to take them off. These boots have Altra’s signature FootShape comfort that gives my feet more space to sit naturally as compared to the typical shoe shape which is narrower.

The boots are waterproof, which is perfect for crossing streams typically found in the alpine backcountry. I love the way water drains out of them and how quickly they dry overnight. While the boots also come in a low trail runner version, I love the mid-height boots. They kept my ankles stable while tackling the elevation gain along the trail to reach our campsite at around 10,000 feet. The Lone Peak pair also has dense rubber outsoles that offer grip on both flat and technical terrains. The canted lugs on the outsoles provide added traction underfoot which I appreciated as we climbed huge boulders in an avalanche chute to catch those famous dramatic Colorado sunsets.

If you are looking for a hiking boot that is lightweight, waterproof, and can handle any kind of adventure — day hikes, overnight, or even thru-hiking — the Lone Peak is the one for you. It goes from box to trail with no break-in period required. It definitely outperformed all my expectations. I now have my sights set on the new Olympus 5 Hike GTX Boots. They have the same ankle support, mega grip outsoles, and advanced waterproof Gore-Tex technology that is guaranteed  to keep you protected from all elements no matter where your adventures take you. After all, a girl can’t have too many hiking shoes, especially since I must make up for the past eighteen years of having only one pair!
