The Best New Flight Routes Starting This Summer (Video)
Ready for summer vacation or already looking forward to college football season? We’ve rounded up some of the best new routes to help you plan that next adventure.
New Southwest service from San Jose to Nashville and Raleigh/Durham
Hot on the heels of its May launch of service from Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) to Honolulu, Oahu and Kahului, Maui, this month Southwest Airlines added daily, year-round nonstop service to Nashville (BNA) and Sunday, summer-season service to the North Carolina’s Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU).
Nashville is Music City, and this summer’s festivals include the free Let Freedom Sing! Music City July 4th; the Tomato Art Fest (August 9-10), the Bluebird on the Mountain Concert Series (multiple dates), the Nashville Symphony’s free Community Concerts (multiple dates) and Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman (various dates), to name just a few.

New Flights to Portugal
Star Alliance member TAP Air Portugal began flying in June to Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) from three new U.S. airports: Chicago O’Hare (ORD), San Francisco International (SFO) and Washington Dulles International (IAD). Flights from each of these airports are offered five times a week.
San Antonio’s new flights to Portland, Minneapolis and Las Vegas
San Antonio got its first nonstop service to Portland, OR with this month’s kick-off of szswzwswwwswwsswzsswwzwwwwwswswwswswSun Country’s new four-times a week flight between San Antonio International Airport (SAT) and Portland International Airport (PDX). In May, Sun Country added a flight between San Antonio and Minneapolis, and on September 5, Sun Country will begin seasonal service between SAT and McCarran International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas to Amsterdam
Speaking of Las Vegas, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, is now flying a 787-9 Dreamliner between Las Vegas and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) three times a week. Spirit Airlines also just added flights between Las Vegas and both Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) and Sacramento International Airport (SMF).
Fly from Philadelphia to Dubrovnik, Berlin and Bologna
This month American Airlines began new seasonal service between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and three European cities: Dubrovnik, Croatia (DBV); Berlin, Germany (TXL); and Bologna, Italy (BLQ)
“These three cities are European treasures, and we are pleased that our partners at American Airlines continue to open convenient paths to new destinations,” said Airport CEO Chellie Cameron. “This new service is even more special as PHL is the only direct connection to Dubrovnik and Bologna from North America. This is tremendous for PHL.”
Service between all three cities operates through September 29. Philadelphia and Dubrovnik operate three times a week, with a fourth flight to be added in September. Flights between PHL and both Bologna and Berlin operate four times a week.
Flights for Football Fans
And sports fans will be pleased to know that United Airlines has added some extra point-to-point flights to its schedule for the 2019 college football season. Tickets for those flights are on sale now.
“Our playbook this year will make it easier than ever for fans, alumni and students to cheer on their teams in other college towns across the country,” said Ankit Gupta, United’s vice president of Domestic Network Planning.
The schedule of added flights kicks off August 30 with a flight from Eugene, OR (EUG) to Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) for Auburn University versus University of Oregon at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX on August 31 and runs through November 8 with a flight between South Bend, Indiana (SBN) and Raleigh Durham (RDU) for the November 9 game between the University of Notre Dame and Duke University.
