How’s this for a pandemic frequent flier perk?

Hawaiian Airlines is allowing its HawaiianMiles loyalty program members to swap frequent flier miles for pre-travel COVID-19 test kits.

HawaiianMiles members across the U.S. can redeem 14,000 miles for a mail-in test kit from Vault Health, one of Hawaii’s official COVID-19 testing partners. The test kits can be used by travelers of all ages, and promise results within 72 hours, making it a convenient option for Hawaii-bound travelers wanting to skip quarantine.

Last month, Hawaii began allowing visitors to skip the mandatory two-week quarantine it had been imposing since the start of the pandemic, so long as they could show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of their flight.

More than 8,000 people landed in the state the day Hawaii’s traveler testing policy went into effect. Airlines, including Hawaiian, have added airport and drive-thru testing to serve Hawaii-bound passengers coming from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

“We remain dedicated to making testing for our guests as convenient and accessible as possible,” Avi Mannis, senior vice president of marketing at Hawaiian Airlines, said in a statement.

Through the HawaiianMiles program, travelers swap their miles for a kit they’ll use to collect their saliva at home with the guidance of a testing supervisor on a video call. Travelers then send their samples to a lab and receive results electronically. Vault Health promises to have results back to travelers within 24 hours and complete the entire process in under 72 hours.

Find yourself short on miles? Hawaiian Airlines is offering a 50,000 mile sign-up bonus for its credit card.
