Travel + Leisure Editorial Guidelines Updated on February 9, 2022 Share Tweet Pin Email The less-visited parts of Hawaii are Smith's specialty. She recently planned a family trip that focused on under-the-radar stops like the Ali'i Kula Lavender farm, in upcountry Maui, and the Honopi'ilani Food Truck Park, in Lahaina. Interest in the islands soared during the pandemic, and Smith has her eye on major hotel reopenings and renovations, like the Four Seasons Hualalai on the island of Hawaii and Turtle Bay's renovation on the North Shore of Oahu. "I also see clients opting to pay more to hire a private boat for the day rather than joining one of the larger group snorkel tours to Molokini Crater, or a private driver to enjoy the Road to Hana rather than navigating themselves," she notes. One of the more heartening developments she's witnessed recently is travelers' increased cultural sensitivity toward Hawaii's Indigenous population. "It opens the door to planning more unique itineraries and connecting clients with locals," she says. To that end, she loves pointing clients to the Mauna Kea on Hawaiʻi, where locals have recently protested the construction of a new telescope. "The volcano is one of the most sacred sites to the Hawaiian people," she says. "Visiting it offers insight into the local culture and allows travelers to become invested in local issues while they're on the island."
