ABOUTAsia Travel, Siem Reap, Cambodia
After realizing that Cambodians were only benefiting marginally from the travel industry, British-born Booth moved to Siem Reap to found the bespoke tour operator ABOUTAsia, which donates its profits to local schools. His specialty is tailoring itineraries to avoid crowds at the temples of Angkor and hiring extremely knowledgeable, English-speaking guides. He’s also the co-author of The Angkor Guidebook, a handbook on Cambodia’s iconic temples.
Top tip: Travelers need to make advanced restaurant reservations in Siem Reap, where a creative fine-dining scene is quickly emerging. His favorite: the new Charcoal restaurant—if it’s not too warm, request a table in the romantic garden—which serves Khmer beef curry and grilled Tonlé sap fish wrapped in banana leaves.
