Tadehara considers Japan a lifelong passion — she lived there for four years and speaks the language fluently. “I have traveled personally to many of the destinations I recommend across all parts of the country, from the big cities to rural villages in the countryside to remote islands that visitors seldom see,” she says. Highlights of the hundreds of itineraries she’s created for clients include private lessons to learn kaiseki-style cooking and tours of workshops which create washi, or traditionally crafted paper. Among the newer crop of hotels Tadehara is excited about include the new Aman property in Kyoto and the Shishi-Iwa House in Karuizawa. “The Aman is a hidden oasis of calm in a busy central part of Kyoto. It’s already receiving a lot of interest from my regular clients, and I think it will be extremely in-demand,” she says. Meanwhile, The Shishi-Iwa House “opened in a mountain resort town that needed additional properties. It’s a boutique luxury hotel, designed to be a restorative sanctuary by Shigeru Ban, an award-winning Japanese architect.”
