Stewart, who lives in Hawkes Bay on the North Island, strives to illuminate her country’s culture with every itinerary she crafts. “Authenticity and genuine experiences continues to be a key trend, such as meeting real people, meeting locals and people with shared interested,” she says. For a U.S.-based doctor who wanted to learn about Maori traditions, she arranged an afternoon with a local elder, who took the client around the bush and taught him about Indigenous plant-derived remedies. More broadly, she notices that clients are very open to learning new things and, in the case of parents, willing to encourage to use trips she plans to introduce their children to new experiences, such as horse riding, kayaking, and fly-fishing.
A desire to travel consciously also remains strong: “People are definitely more interested in the impact of travel and how they can reduce the environmental footprint — for example, offsetting the long flights to New Zealand and Australia,” observes Stewart.
