Dallas residents may consider Rockwall a distant suburb, but the area differentiates itself with its small town feel and ideal location on the edge of Lake Ray Hubbard. Rockwall gets its name from an underground rock formation that was discovered by settlers in the 1850s; a debate rages on as to whether the wall was manmade or natural. —Stirling Kelso

Lake Ray Hubbard

There aren’t any camping grounds surrounding this lake, but there are plenty of boating docks and marinas from which you can head out in a kayak or ski boat. If you love fishing, bring your pole for striped and largemouth bass.

Fatted Calf Texas

Comfort foods such as salmon with a honey-chili glaze and a pub burger with bacon jam are well priced at this local staple. Stop in for live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

Hilton, Dallas/Rockwall Lakefront

Some of the 231 rooms have private balconies overlooking the water at this hotel on the Rockwall Harbor. You’re in walking distance from shops and cafes, though the hotel’s two restaurants and pool with bar service might tempt you to stay.

Buffalo Creek Golf Course

So golf can be affordable: Rates start at $19 at this 18-hole course on the banks of Lake Hubbard. Still fine tuning your skills? There’s also a putting green and driving range.
