Video: Five Things to Do in Sorrento, Italy

Fresh pasta, Italian wine, waterfront views. Time to book a trip.

Settled high on the cliffs of Italy’s Amalfi Coast is the picturesque town of Sorrento, arguably the ideal escape for those looking to breathe fresh bay air and sip locally made limoncello.

Check into the surreal Gio Ponti hotel, Parco dei Principi—one of Jonathan Adler’s favorites. Drop your bags, and start your trip to Sorrento with an easy stroll through Villa Comunale, a public park with impressive vistas from the terrace out over the Bay of Naples.

Next, make your way to the beach. It wouldn’t be a proper trip to coastal Italy without spending time sunning and swimming at one of Sorrento’s beaches. Don’t forget to stop by the Marina Grande to admire the fishing community’s harbor houses and grab an apertif at one of the many waterfront restaurants.

Adventurous travelers have no trouble finding fun things to do Sorrento. After all, you can take a quick cable car ride to the famed Mount Vesuvius, and hike along the edge of the active volcano. For a more spiritual experience, head to the Romanesque cathedral, Duomo Dei San Filippo e Giacomo. And the oldest church in town, Basilica di Sant’Antonino is the perfect place to look at ancient artifacts and medieval paintings.

Leave plenty of time for one of the most important parts of the trip: the food. What to do in Sorrento for dinner is order fresh seafood from one of the many waterfront restaurants. Pair every plate with a glass of local wine. If you can, snag a table at Relais Blu Hotel, and you’ll get an unforgettable view of Capri while you dine.
