Nothing but net.
Experienced skydiver Luke Aikins did something crazy on Saturday: He jumped out of a plane at 25,000 feet with no parachute and no wingsuit.
After plummeting toward the ground for two minutes, the 42-year-old landed easily in a giant net suspended 200 feet above the ground on a movie lot near Los Angeles. Aikins performed the stunt as part of an hour-long special, “Heaven Sent,” which broadcast his jump live.
“I'm almost levitating. It's incredible,” he told the Associated Press. “This thing just happened! I can't even get the words out of my mouth.”
He planned his jump carefully, and got some technological assistance to complete the feat: His helmet was equipped with GPS, and a lighting system on the ground provided directions similar to those that pilots use to land airplanes.
Aikins has been skydiving since he was 12 years old. He has since racked up about 18,000 jumps.
