Union troops used the site as a staging area.

After Hurricane Matthew passed through an island in South Carolina, residents found it had uncovered Civil War-era cannonballs.

A bomb team evaluated the discovery—which could have proven deadly—and detonated part of the discovery and transproting the rest to a Navy base, according to the Charleston County sheriff.

The relics were discovered on Folly Island, which Union troops used during the war as a staging area, Gizmodo reported.

Hurricane Matthew left destruction in its path, killing hundreds in Haiti before bringing flooding and damage to U.S. coastal states.
