Meghan Markle is changing up very old royal traditions before she even officially joins the family.

A Kensington Palace spokeswoman confirmed to multiple outlets, including People, that “You can expect to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry and Meghan on Christmas Day.”

This is a major change from the old royal rules of “no girlfriends, boyfriends, or fiancés” for the holidays. Even Kate Middleton was barred from spending the holidays with her then-fiancé Prince William at Sandringham House, the family’s home in Norfolk, located about 110 miles north of London. And as ABC reported, Mike Tindall, the husband of Zara Philips, Queen Elizabeth's granddaughter, also did not attend the royal family party for Christmas before their wedding.

According to People, the palace would not reveal any other details about the couple’s holiday plans, including where they will be staying. However, rumor has it that Meghan and Harry will stay with Prince William and Kate Middleton at Anmer Hall, an estate located less than two miles from the main house.

The palace has also yet to confirm if Meghan will simply join the family for the annual church services at St. Mary Magdalene Church on Christmas Day, which is a short walk from the main Sandringham House, or if she will take part in all other activities as well. Those activities include a festive Christmas Eve dinner, exchanging gifts, and a large brunch on Christmas day.

If she does take part in the gift giving event, Markle may be in for a real treat. Despite the stiff upper lip the royal family presents to the public, it turns out they all have a softer, and funnier, side when it comes to presents. According to royal insiders, each year the family competes to see who can give the cheapest, silliest, and downright most inappropriate gift. And we mean really inappropriate. According to Express, Prince Harry once gave Queen Elizabeth a shower cap that read "Ain't life a bitch?" Prince Charles was reportedly also once gifted a white leather toilet seat by his sister. So hopefully Meghan has a royal sense of humor as well.
