Hotels in Zürich + The Northern Cities
This 168-year-old family-owned hotel in the city center, overlooking Lake Zürich, is both historic and up-to-date: more than $160 million has been spent on renovations over the past decade.
Designed by Foster & Partners, the hotel underwent a four-year high-tech makeover that cost a cool $427 million.
Outside, an ancient square is anchored by a splashing fountain and medieval church bells toll. Inside, the hotel’s 23 funky rooms—some in herbal greens, others in bright reds and oranges—are outfitted with low-slung platform beds and plenty of space to hang your clothes and coats.
Nothing captures the town’s charm like the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof, with its pitched roofs and 19th-century wood-paneled façade. The suites blend old-world details (fireplaces; carved pine headboards) with modern amenities (flat-screen TV’s; heated tile floors in the bathrooms).
For impressive views at a more affordable price, this property is perfect with its wood-beamed rooms that are simple but cheery.
The ground floor of this updated 15th-century house near Zurich is occupied by Face, a postmodern gallery, while the remaining three floors—called Brain and Soul—contain a suite and a private apartment with an open fireplace and platform bed.
