Zihuatanejo
Hotel Las Palmas
Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico
Savvy travelers are familiar with the government-planned beach resort destination of Ixtapa, about 150 miles northwest of Acapulco, but few are familiar with the village of Zihuatanejo, the Mexican state’s earthier hideaway just three miles south. Set in this laid-back town is the eco-friendly Hotel Las Palmas, which stands out among the many low-lying resorts perched atop seaside cliffs because of its location along the pristine nine-mile Playa Blanca beach. The boutique hotel comprises just 10 peaceful suites, with interior spaces that are without TVs, phones, and Internet access; an adults-only policy adds to the tranquil atmosphere. Inside, bathing-suit-clad travelers will find canopy beds, folk art, native wood furnishings, and hammocks for enjoying the cool sea breezes off the water. With a secluded, away-from-it-all feel (but a location that’s just five miles from the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International airport), Hotel Las Palmas exudes a throwback sensibility, allowing travelers to truly focus on rest and relaxation.
Room to Book:
The hotel's new Penthouse suite is a 2,000-square-foot space with its own full-size pool, a living room, and a kitchen with a traditional Mexican arched-brick ceiling.
Insider Tip:
Between May and October, Playa Blanca is a famous nesting site for native turtles including leatherbacks (the largest species of marine turtle); lucky travelers will witness hundreds of the reptiles crawling up the sand to lay eggs, but be sure to keep an appropriate distance from the wildlife, as no one is on duty to ensure that the animals remain safe.
