On a wood plank sign, colorful markers advertising authentic Costa Rican dishes welcome visitors to this family-owned café in Bucktown. In addition to a small dining room, Irazu also features a popular outdoor patio that, while enclosed by a bamboo fence, still allows for people-watching in the summer. Regulars recommend the homemade empanadas as well as the casado, a traditional dish of meat or veggies with caramelized onions, rice and beans, sweet plantains, cabbage, and egg. However, Irazu’s most famous menu item is easily the oatmeal shake, described by diners as tasting like an oatmeal cookie in liquid form.
Take advantage of the restaurant’s BYOB policy by bringing a bottle of tequila and ordering a pitcher of lime slush to use as a mixer.
