A non-beach location next to Waikiki’s Yacht Harbor hasn’t stopped The Modern Honolulu from exuding an oceanfront sensibility: the Sunset Pool, one of two at the 18-floor property, overlooks the coast and has a sand-filled garden with palm trees. Inside, the 353 rooms and suites have bathrooms that feature showers or tubs (some have both), tropical flower arrangements, and sarongs for guests to use. At 4:00 p.m., the lobby turns into a sophisticated escape, when bookshelves rotate to reveal a stylish bar. Adding to the property’s cachet is the eco-friendly Spa at the Modern Honolulu, and Morimoto Waikiki, the Honolulu outpost of Iron Chef Masuharu Morimoto, known for his Japanese fusion cuisine.
