Vieux-Montréal (Old Montreal)
Marché de la Villette
Montreal, Quebec, H2Y 2A3, Canada
This French-style deli-cum-bistro in Old Montreal is cluttered with chalkboards, Paris street signs, vintage canned goods, and faux meat hanging from the ceiling. From the enterence off the narrow one-way street, a long glass refrigerator displays foie gras pate, pork terrine, cured meats, and Quebec cheeses. Besides platters of these, the eatery sells items like croque monsieur with bacon, pots of fondue, ham and cheese crêpes, and the house cassoulet — a blend of duck confit with sausage, beans, and pork belly. The seating, an eclectic mix of bentwood chairs, is tightly packed around the unclothed tables.
Insider Tip:
It’s a two-minute downhill walk to the small museum about Ste. Marguerite d’Youville, run by the Soeurs Grises de Montreal. Tours are by appointment.
