The auberge’s other charms—unobstructed views of the port and Moshe Safdie’s iconic Habitat ‘67 housing units, a lively rooftop terrace, gentle prices, and more historic atmosphere than any other hotel in the city—round out its many charms. Just beware the rooms’ sloping wooden floors, which can make even a teetotaler feel like a drunken sailor.

Room to Book: Don’t bother unless you can reserve quarters that face the port. And be warned: five Standard Queens come only with a standing, plastic shower stall. The upgrade to a Deluxe King for a full bath and a view is worth it.
