These fields have been written about and walked on since the 12th century. Long a royal hunting grounds, in the early 18th century the royal family turned the area over to the public to enjoy, with a park and cafés. Eventually, carousels and other intricate rides were added. It's now the home of the famous Reisenrad Ferris wheel (made iconic by the Orson Wells film The Third Man). The Prater remains one of Vienna's most popular parks and outdoor meeting grounds.
